By Don Beane

NORWOOD – Chatham Central made the long trek to Norwood on Tuesday night    to battle 1A Yadkin Valley Conference foe South Stanly.

And after starting slow the Bears heated up in the 2nd quarter and never looked back in routing the host Rebel Bulls 78-48.

Chatham Central improves to 7-5 in league play with the big conference win while also upping its overall mark to 9-9 overall.

“Anytime you can win on the road is big and South Stanly is a tough place to play,” said CC coach Bill Slaughter after the game. “We started out a little slow but picked things up in the 2nd quarter. Conner (Fewell) gave us a big lift off the bench in that period.”

Fewell had six points in the frame on the way to nine in the opening half and 13 for the game.

Josh Edwards, LaQuinn Mordecai and Jared Jones each chipped in four points in the 2nd quarter as Chatham Central outscored South Stanly 19-8 in the period to erase a 17-16 deficit after one quarter into a 35-25 lead at the intermission.

BEAR CREEK – The Chatham Central girls basketball team used a balanced scoring attack here on Monday night in Bear Creek to completely dominate visiting Lee Christian Academy 57-12 in area non-conference hoops action.

A total of 10 players out of 11 dressed for the Lady Bears scored on Monday evening as the locals strolled to the easy win in upping its record to   15-6 overall while also erasing a nightmare effort over at Denton versus South Davidson on Friday night.

“Defensively we played really well and that was the difference in the game,” said CC coach Gerald Binkley. “We were able to create some turnovers which led to easy baskets.”

Binkley was also pleased that everyone contributed to the win.

“It’s good to see everyone get in and to get to play a lot of minutes,” added Binkley. “Having 10 people reach the scoring column is a good thing.”

Brooke Strickland led the Bears on Monday night with 10 points while Kirsten Cole and Mackayla Brown had eight points apiece, Monique Cotton seven points, and   Jordan Culberson six points.

MIAMI, FL – There were a lot of surprised people around the NFL when former Jordan-Matthews standout and Duke University graduate George Edwards was released by the Buffalo Bills as Defensive Coordinator.

Edwards and the Bills had exceeded expectations in his 2nd year at the position.

But the opportunity for Buffalo coach Chan Gailey to reunite with long time coaching friend Dave Wannstedt proved too much for Edwards to overcome.

On Monday afternoon Edwards landed on his feet back after being hired by new Miami coach Joe Philbin as the Dolphins linebackers coach.
