J.E. (EDWARD) BOOTH

In the midst of a full and vibrant life at 93, John Edward Booth, slipped his earthly bonds amid the caring comfort of family and friends. He is mourned by the village of all he ever met and knew.

He was born July 31, 1916 on the southeastern edge of Wake County, the son and fifth child of Levie Womble and Colon Booth. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Swannie Bailey Booth, his son, Doyle Edward Booth and his brothers and sisters, W. Jennings Booth, Golda Booth, Alvin Booth, Bernie W. Booth, H. Leon Booth, Hazel Booth Davis Hummer, and G. Worth Booth.  He is survived by his daughter, Kathryn Booth Butler and husband, Ian Whittier Butler, his grandson, Ian Roe Stewart and wife, Wendy McDonald Stewart, great-grandson, Landon Thomas Stewart and many generations of nieces and nephews.

Edward moved with his family to the northeastern edge of Chatham County in 1928, where his father had followed the opportunity to harvest timber on the land which was to become Duke Hospital. He graduated from the historic Green Hope High School (Cary) where he was class valedictorian.  He was enrolled in NC State University but family obligations made it impossible for him to attend. Instead he took over the family lumber business as the third generation to pursue that occupation. He then bought an adjoining property to that of his family and lived on those lands for a total of 82 years.

He and Swannie were married in 1940 and worked together to build his business.  He was a recognized authority in forestry for his knowledge of timber management and his ability to accurately assess the value of a tract of timber and to maximize the yield--a task performed today by computer. He was active in the affairs of Chatham County and served on the Planning Board and the Forestry Extension Program. He was pleased to work with NC State in the Department of Soil Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The J. Edward Booth Field Learning Laboratory facility was dedicated in 2007 in recognition of his contribution.

A man of impeccable integrity, he was known for his brilliance, his judgment, his discipline and his passion for hard work.    He had a great love of people and spent his life doing for others--his greatest pleasure.

TIMOTHY “TIM” BRUCE MORGAN

Timothy “Tim” Bruce Morgan, 57, died of liver failure at his home in Pittsboro on Tuesday, January 26, 2010, surrounded by his partner, Samantha Birchard; his former wife and enduring friend, Katie Haywood; his longtime buddy, Don Basnight; and his dog, Tasha.

Born on July 23, 1952, in Atlantic City, NJ, Tim was the adopted son of the late Fred Bruce and Ruth McNamee Morgan. Much of his youth was spent with his family in Amherst, MA, where his father worked as a professor of religion at Amherst College. Tim received his secondary education at Williston Academy, and while there he befriended and studied with renowned illustrator and wood-block engraver Barry Moser. He went on to graduate from Harvard University in 1975 with an A.B. degree in English. Tim was an avid and accomplished squash player and played in Harvard’s varsity league.

Following graduation, Tim moved to Ossabaw Island off the coast of Savannah, GA, which at the time was privately owned and home of the Ossabaw Island Project, a program designed to provide a creative retreat for artists and academics. There he worked as a boat operator and general jack-of-all-trades. Following sale of the island to the state of Georgia in the late 1970s, Tim moved to Aiken, SC, where he began his own house-painting business.

In 1988, Tim moved to Chapel Hill to be with his future wife, whom he had met in her hometown of Aiken. Tim and Katie were married in Pittsboro in 1995 and moved to Hillsborough in 1997. Following their divorce in 2004, Tim returned to Pittsboro, where in 2009 he met Samantha, with whom he resided until his death.

Tim enjoyed the creativity involved in carpentry and home restoration, taking pleasure in making things beautiful, which he did brilliantly in his capacity as sole proprietor of Morgan Restoration. His work is marked by fine craftsmanship, imagination, and a distinctive flair for the whimsical.

Tim’s other interests included flying (he received his pilot’s license in 2001), driving his Alfa Romeo convertible, and taking long walks along the shores of Jordan Lake with his long-abiding companion and perhaps his greatest love, his dog, Tasha.

Other survivors include his sisters, Rebecca Morgan of Plymouth, MA, and Jill Morgan Marshall of White Hill, Nova Scotia.
