• The Chatham County Retired School Personnel will meet Thursday, September 9 at Bestfoods Cafeteria in Siler City. Plan to arrive at 11:30 to get your food before the program starts. All retirees are invited. Following lunch, Dr. Robert L. Logan, Superintendent of the Chatham County Schools will present the program on the county schools.

• UNC Hospice Volunteer Training - Join a team of professionals who work to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of terminally ill persons and their families,  Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4:30 p.m.,  September 14-28 at UNC Hospice, 480 Hillsboro Street, Pittsboro. • A unique quilt fashioned from labels made in Chatham Mills makes its final summer showing on Sunday, September 5, between 1 and 3 p.m., at Pittsboro's First Sunday. The well-used quilt, probably made in the 1940s, will be on display in the Chatham Historical Museum, 184 East Street. The museum is also open on Wednesdays from noon to 3 p.m. and by special arrangement,  542-3603.

• The Disabled American Veterans Chapter #91 will meet at the Agricultural Building in Pittsboro, Wednesday, September 8 at 7:30 p.m. There are several new DAV officers, come meet them and bring a fellow VET with you.

• Pittsboro First Sunday, September 5.  Explore the unique shops, galleries and local eateries. Over 30 local artists and craftsfolk will have tables set up with their unique offerings. "Frizzwheel" will appear on the musical stage. For an idea of the variety of participating artists, visit www.pitts boroshops.com for more information.

• Mark Hewitt Pottery Summer Kiln Opening, Saturday, September 4, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.And Sunday, September 5, noon to 5 p.m. Directions at: www.hewittpottery.com or by calling 542-2371.

• Gospel music at Sharpe’s Store will be held Saturday, September 4 from 10 a.m. until. (Acoustic instruments only) Pickers, singers, and listeners will all be welcome.

• Locopops 5th Anniversary party, Labor Day, from 4 to 6 pm is donating all the proceeds from the party at their Chapel Hill store to the Abundance Foundation Slow Money Project of Pittsboro. Enjoy FREE Locopops and hear about the Slow Money story at  231 S. Elliot Road, Chapel Hill. For more about the project, call 919-533-5181 and leave a message for Carol.

• Tri-County Ruritan Flatwoods Festival will be held September 10 and 11 in Bennett. Friday night, free, at Hussey farm with music and auction. Saturday morning, parade of antique cars, trucks, and tractors on main street. At 1 p.m., tractor pull, live entertainment featuring Chad & Kristi Gaines and Ed Duke, AKA the “Bynum Devil” at the Hussey farm. Children 12 and under admitted free, charge for adults. • The Jordan-Matthews "Class of 94" will have a meeting on September 18 at Dry Dock Seafood from 4:30-6 p.m. to continue fundraising efforts and discuss details of the reunion. If there are any questions, contact LaQuesha Scales at 336-447-0443 or gemini2heart@hotmail.com.

• The Robyn’s Nest Creative Learning Center will host an Open House Thursday,  September 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. See how we work to scaffold development as children grow from infants through school-age. Light refreshments will be served. Located at 69 Robyn’s Nest Lane, Pittsboro. Everyone will be welcome.

• AARP Driver Safety Program will teach strategies to compensate for the normal changes in aging. No actual driving required. Class will be held Monday, October 4 at the Eastern Chatham Senior Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Charge applies. For information/register, contact Lindsay Hickling at 542-4512. Chatham Street Rod Association have a Cruise In the first Saturday of every month, (September 4), at Auto Zone/Sonic from 5 p.m. until… Old cars, “oldie goldie” music, and 50/50 drawing. Call Jeff McDaniel at 663-2358 for information.

• The North Carolina Emergency Reserves has opportunities for all who wish to be involved in most aspects of disaster-response. Membership is open to all state citizens age 18 and up. • The Chatham County Soil and Water Conservation District will meet Thursday, September 9  at 7:30 p.m. in the conference room downstairs in the Agricultural Building in Pittsboro. This is an open meeting. For additional information, call the office at 542-8240.

• If there are drug problems in the family, Narcotics Anonymous helps. Call 1-800-721-8225 for listing of local meetings.

• If interested in giving a child a safe place to grow, become a foster and/or adoptive parent in Chatham County. Call 642-6956 to learn more about these programs.

• Southern Village 2010 Summer Music Series will present the following concerts at 7 p.m.: Sunday, September 5, The Grand Finale: The Southern Village Labor Day Weekend Variety Show!; Sunday, September 12, the 11th annual Baby Benefit Concert; and Saturday, September 18, Once: Pearl Jam Tribute Band benefit for the Little Red Wagon Foundation, donation amount TBA.

• Don't miss the last PBO Community Dance Jam of the year on the anniversary of 9/11 in a smoke and alcohol free space at the Pittsboro Community House, 65 Thompson Street. Family and friends will enjoy jams from around the globe, including soul, Latin, African, R&B, reggae, old skool and conscious hip hop. Donations at the door – under 12 and over 60 free. • Family to Family is a series of 12 weekly classes structured to help family members understand and support a loved one with a serious mental illness. There is no cost to participate. The twelve-week class will run Thursday, September  2 through November 18, 6:30-9 p.m. in the Dogwood Room at the Seymour Center, 2551 Homestead Rd, Chapel Hill.
