Blue skies and a wonderful crowd are
what made the Silk Hope Ruritan Club’s 29th Annual Old
Fashioned Farmers’ Day so successful, according to Ruritan president
Johnny Johnson.
For the first time in three years, the
threat of rain did not keep folks from attending the event, Johnson
added.
Committees had been preparing for the
event for more than three months, he continued.
In addition to the wives of club
members, there were several volunteers who helped make the event
possible, Johnson stated.
“We couldn’t have done it without them,”
he said.
And all of their hard work paid off.
Hundreds of people attended the
three-day event at the G.T. Petty Memorial grounds, which offered a
variety of activities for both the young and the young at heart.
Some people traveled from as far as
Morehead City and Rocky Mount to attend the event, Johnson added.
Those in attendance enjoyed an antique
car exhibit, pony rides, train rides, saw milling, rock crushing, corn
shredding and much more.
Several local farmers even brought their
animals for all to see.
Janice Lindley brought a few of her
Holstein cows and taught on-lookers how to make butter.
Jeff McLaurin brought several mules for
visitors to pet.
Pigs, goats, alpaca and other farm
animals could also be found throughout the grounds.
