• Leslie Fesperman, Chatham County artist whose medium is glass, will be a featured artist for the month of October at the Cary Gallery of Artists. The gallery will be hosting a reception on Friday, September 30 from 6-8 p.m. at 200 Academy Street, Suite #120 in Ashworth Village in Cary. For more information, call 462-2035.

• The Silk Hope Ruritan Club will host an American Red Cross blood drive Friday, October 7 from 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at their club building, 8110 Silk Hope-Gum Springs Road, Siler City. Several double red cell machines will be available for those who choose to donate red cells and receive credit  for two units for this procedure.  For more information, contact Doug Boyette at 919-663-1151.

• Open gospel pickin’ on Saturday, October 1 at Reno Sharpe’s Store, on the corner of Goldston-Pittsboro Road and Reno Sharpe Store Road, between Pittsboro and Goldston. Pickers, bring acoustic instruments only. Free and open to the public.

• Occaneechi-Saponi Pow-Wow will be October 7&8 in  Mebane. Traditional music, dance, arts, crafts and food. Grounds open at 5 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. on Saturday. Admission, $4, seniors and children, $2. Take exit 153 off I-85, travel north out of Mebane about 10 miles on NC 119, cross NC 49, Dailey Store Road is first road on right. Site is .9 mile on left. Follow signs.

• Join Cub Scout, Pack 924 of Siler City at the First United Methodist Church on Tuesdays, from 7 – 8:30 p.m. For boys, grades 1 – 5.

• Every Monday at 6:30 p.m. for the month of October, Narcotics Anonymous will meet at Alston Chapel Church.

• PreSchool Storytime – every Wednesday, 10 – 11 a.m. at Spectacle Brooks, 113 Siler Crossing Shopping Center in Siler City.

• Asheboro fall festival parade will be held Friday, October 7. Line-up will take place on Church Street beginning at 6 p.m. All people are welcome to participate, but all must be registered to be included. There is no fee for entry. • Chatham County Relay for Life concert will be held on Saturday, October 1 at Chatham Central High School. A pre-show will be provided by the CCHS choral department. Keith Hender-son, national competition winner, will perform “Illusions of the King” – a tribute to Elvis Presley. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30. Tickets are $15 – for more information, call 919-898-2964.

• Central Carolina Regional Memory Walk will be held Saturday, October 1 at Kiwanis Park, Wicker Street Ext., Hwy 42, Sanford. Registration begins at 8 a.m. for the walk at 9 a.m. Entertainment, food, sponsor display, and a memory garden (honor a loved one by placing a Forget-Me-Not in the Alz-heimer’s Memory Garden to pay tribute to those affected by Alzheimers and those who have passed on.) Join families, friends, and co-workers for a morning of fun and memories to help raise fund and awareness.

• Festifall! Sunday, October 2, 1-6 p.m., downtown Chapel Hill, West Franklin Street. Come out and hear the sounds of various musical genres.

• The Exceptional children’s Assistance Center (ECAC) is sponsoring a free workshop for parents of children with disabilities September 29 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Stevens Foundation, 1576 Kelly Drive, Sanford. Materials provided. Registration in advance is helpful. Learn about rights under the IDEA ’04, No Child Left Behind and other laws, participating in your child’s IEP, managing your child’s records and more. • Adults interested in learning proper etiquette and manners of dining can attend “Dining Like A Diplomat” class with etiquette consultant Cecilia Grimes October 14 from 7-8:30 p.m., at Moring Arts Center, Asheboro. Dessert and copy of “The Little Book of Etiquette” will be included in the fee. • Cecelia Grimes will also offer “Managing Your Manners,” a class for children ages 5-7 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., and ages 8-12 from 10-11:30 a.m., both on October 15. Hotcakes breakfast with other goodies. Children will develop table manners and proper ways to hold utensils. • The Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau has published a new 2006 Official Dining & Nightlife Guide for Orange County. The 40-page booklet lists all restaurants and nightclubs geographically by town location and also has a corresponding index by cuisine type. • State & local employee’s retirement planning conference Tuesday, October 11 at Randolph Community College Learning Resource Center Auditorium. The teacher’s & state employees’ retirement system session will be held at 9:30 a.m. and the local government employees’ retirement system session will be held at 1:30 p.m. Learn more about the benefits of the state retirement system and the 401(k) plan. • The former JOCCA building is now the Neighborhood Community Center. There will be a community meeting on Monday, October 3 at 7 p.m.. The center is located at 1401 Ross Avenue in Siler City.

• The Ruth Pauley Lecture Series continues on Tuesday, October 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Owens Auditorium on the Sandhills Community College Campus in Pinehurst,  with Dr. Kenneth Duckworth, Medical Director for the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. His lecture will be “Tom Cruise Doesn’t Get It…The Real Truth of Mental Illness.” This is free of charge and open to the public. No tickets required. For additional infor-mation, call 910-245-3132.

• The Home Builder Association of Durham & Orange Counties will host the 2005 Parade of Homes on October 1-2, 7-9, 14-16 from 12 to 5 p.m. onsite at new homes throughout Chatham, Durham, and Orange counties. • The Triangle Area Rural Planning Organization technical coordinating committee will hold a meeting, October 12 from 2:30-4 p.m. at C.C.C.C., Building B, multi-purpose conference room, 764 West Street, Pittsboro. New officers will be elected and meeting calendar for fiscal year 2006 will be set up. Rural transportation planning issues will be discussed including rural agriculture district highway signage practices, strategic highway corridor land use guideline and bicycle/pedestrian facilities inventory.
