Jets rout Dragons By Don Beane TYRO – Jordan-Matthews continued to roll in soccer with a 5-0 rout of West Davidson in Yadkin Valley 1A play on Monday night. The Jets, ranked 3rd in the state 1A polls, started quickly with Luis Lopez reaching the net in the first two minutes of the game. Lopez received a nice crossing pass from Albelardo Ramirez and headed it past the goalie. Ramirez tallied a goal of his own four minutes later off a corner kick from Martin Hernandez to make it 2-0 in favor of J-M. Jordan-Matthews tacked on two more goals in the first half to make it a 4-0 run away at the half. Ramirez collected a scored the first on an assist from Lopez while Octavio Hernandez put the Jets up by four just before the break. "This was a challenging game for us in the fact it is hard for a team to get up for a team that is still coming along," said J-M coach Paul Cuadros, who’s club out-shot the Dragons 46-3. "But we stayed focused, got the job done, stayed healthy, and put this game behind us."
To shoot or not to shoot... It may not be basketball season yet, but it’s never to early to talk hoops. This is not about the ACC or the NBA, it‘s about the art of trash can basketball. Now, when talking about such an important and everyday topic as this one, the first thing one must do is ask themselves if they participate in such a pastime. Whether it’s at home or at the office, or at the gas station or the post office, there are always courts to play on. Again, one must ask themselves if they are the kind of person who patiently walks the waste to the trash can or do you take a shot at it, and risk missing and having to walk over and throw the trash away again I am a shooter. Over the weekend, I discovered that I am shooter without a conscience who is not afraid to take a shot from anywhere. At my house, we have a main trash can in the kitchen that stands about three-feet high with one of those dome shaped lids that has a sort of mouth for an opening that you can open and close. To make a wadded up paper towel in this can requires a low trajectory shot that I am good from about 15-feet. It’s not a high-percentage shot, so I try not to shot anything that might splatter, like a dirty diaper. Stuff like apple cores, napkins, and cans, however, are going up. Then there’s the little can in the bathroom. This shot is much trickier as the pail sits nestled between the toilet and the sink. Upon looking at it, the shot seems innocuous, but it can bite you. For some reasons the bounce off the side of the toilet is not pure, making it difficult to sink things like Q-tips, leaving my percentage in the bathroom hovering around 50%.
Rebels no match for Bears By Don Beane The Chatham Central girl’s tennis team took a pair of matches last week to move to 8-2 in Yadkin Valley 1A play and to 10-2 overall. On Wedneday afternoon, the Lady Bears traveled to Norwood to battle league foe South Stanly. It was a mismatch from the outset as Central dominated play on the hard court, surrendering just two games the entire day to the Rebels. Erin Leonard (No. 1), Katie Liles (No. 2), Caroline Liles (No. 4), Amanda Wilkins (No. 5) and Ashley Willet (No. 6) all took easy 8-0 victories over their respective opponents while Kimberly Fox drubbed Julia Faulkner 8-1 in the No. 3 tilt. The Bears continued to romp in double’s play with Leonard and Katie Liles teaming up for an 8-0 win in the top-seeded contest while Fox and Caroline Liles rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 2. Wilkins and Willett blanked Jennifer Ritchie and Mac Almond of South Stanly 8-0 at No. 3 to cap off the convincing 9-0 Bear triumph.
