Mathias repeats as state 1-A Champion By Don Beane CARY – Helen Mathias of Jordan-Matthews etched another 1A state title in the record books on Saturday morning by outlasting Kasey Mabe of North Stokes 6-1, 6-7(5-7), 7-6(7-1) at the Cary Tennis Center. In doubles, J-M’s Lindsey Phillips and Amy Stackhouse saw a valiant run at a state title fall just short with a 6-0, 7-5 defeat to Mary Elizabeth Rouse and Jessica Eblen of Hendersonville. For Mathias, the victory on Saturday marked back-to-back state 1A titles for the Jet senior, and puts the cap on a brilliant individual tennis career at the Siler City school. Mathias and Jordan-Matthews were scheduled to battle Hendersonville yesterday (Tuesday) for a bid at playing for another 1A Dual Team state title during her tenure at J-M. Against Mabe, it was clear from the start that Mathias was not on top of her game.

Jets fall to Green Dragons By Don Beane SILER CITY – West Davidson put a damper on Senior Night at Jordan-Matthews on Friday evening as the Green Dragons rolled into Siler City and downed a young Jet squad 26-6 in Yadkin Valley gridiron action.J-M coach Marty Scotten knew his club had a tall order in front of it on Friday as the Jets started three freshmen and three sophomores on defense against a West Davidson club which bolstered a roster that included 26 seniors. In the end it was that strength and experience up front that spelled the difference in the outcome of the contest as the Green Dragons simply out-muscled the younger Jets.
