Running them over . . .

North Moore’s Cameron Thomas runs over a couple of Jordan-Matthews defenders in Friday nights game at J-M. Thomas, the 6 foot 6, 300 pounder is being recruited to play Division 1 football, and is only a junior. The Jets had a tough time stopping the big running back but Jordan-Matthews did win the game.

Jets hold on for 2-1 victory over Thomasville

By Anthony Holderied

THOMASVILLE – It wasn’t pretty when Jordan-Matthews got tangled up with Thomasville on the soccer field Monday night.

In the match that featured three yellow cards and an ejected player, the Jets were able to capture a key Yadkin Valley Conference victory on the road, holding off Thomasville 2-1.

"This was a tough game away tonight," Jets Coach Paul Cuadros said after the match. "We knew Thomasville would play us rough tonight on their home turf, but we responded to the challenge."

And rough it was, as all three carded players were from the Thomasville side, including one that was ejected for unsportsman-like conduct. The ejection allowed the Jets to stave off the Bulldogs, who were subjected to playing with just 10 players in the second half.

Jordan-Matthews (7-4) had built just enough of a first-half lead to hold on to its seventh conference win. With all of the scoring being done in the first half, the Jets relied on their defense in the second half to hold off a hostile Bulldog bunch.

"The defense really stepped up tonight and shut down (Thomasville’s) main attacking players," Cuadros said. "Credit goes to center defender Sergio Montiel and sweeper Yoni Larios for stopping Thomasville’s main weapon."

Green Dragons roll over Bears in 58-0 shellacking

By Anthony Holderied

BEAR CREEK – The rain was light, and the scoring was heavy– for West Davidson, that is. The Green Dragons rolled into town and buried Chatham Central on its home turf 58-0 in front of a sparse crowd.

There weren’t many out in Bear Creek Friday, as a light gusting rain put a damper on the few spectators as well as the Bears chances of winning. Central, outmatched on paper and the field, took its lumps from West Davidson and its ninth loss of the year in nine games.

The Bears (0-9) have now just one more chance to try and get into the win column this year, hoping to avoid two straight winless seasons. But Central faces undefeated Albemarle at Bear Creek next week in its final game, putting a gloomy outlook on breaking that curse.

The Green Dragons (3-4, 3-2) on the other hand, are trying to stay in a close race for third place in the Yadkin Valley Conference. West Davidson is neck-and-neck with the vastly improved Eagles of East Montgomery, at 3-2.

NW soccer blasts Eagles, Indians

By Anthony Holderied

PITTSBORO – To emphasize how little competition the Mid-State Conference has posed to Northwood this year, the thirdplace Eagles of Eastern Alamance hosted the Chargers on Monday, and were crushed 6-1.

Eastern (4-3-0), even with one of the league’s top scorers in Matt Smith, was no match for Northwood for the second time this year. In the teams’ first meeting, the Eagles were destroyed 11-1, for a grand total of 17 goals surrendered to the Chargers.

"EA came in with a plan to stop our high-scoring offense– the offside trap, and it worked to some degree," Northwood Coach Alan Metter said.

"It certainly kept our scoring down, but six goals on the road in a conference match is excellent work. Many teams ‘pack-it-back’ in front of the goal to stop us and that hasn’t worked either."
