Moody Dragons humble Bears 47-0

By Eliot Duke

TYRO – Chatham Central just had to play West Davidson in a bad mood.

The Dragons were a little on the ornery side Friday night when they hosted CC on Homecoming.

After losing to Yadkin Valley 1A leader Albemarle last week, WD saw its undefeated season vanish.

This meant bad news for the Bears, as the Dragons showed no mercy for their Homecoming prey, demolishing CC, 47-0.

As the score indicates, the game was never close.

WD raced out to a 40-0 halftime lead, thanks in part to a smothering defense and a punishing ground attack.

The Bears fumbled the ball five times en route to amassing a mere 100 yards of total offense.

The Dragons, however, ran all over CC to the tune of 309 yards, including 247 on the ground.

Four CC turnovers directly resulted in 28 points for WD.

Bo McCubbins, Zach Roach, and Jordan Hobbs each scored a pair of touchdowns.

Roach ran for 134 yards on 10 carries, while the Bears tallied only 19 first half yards.

J-M inches toward YVC soccer crown

By Don Beane

BISCOE – Jordan-Matthews took what may have been the deciding step to clinching a Yadkin Valley 1A crown in soccer on Monday evening as the Jets traveled to East Montgomery and dealt the second-place Eagles a convincing 4-1 defeat.

"This game was won in the middle, I’m real proud of them," said J-M Paul Cuadros after the huge win. "Our midfield did not put up a lot of foals, but they controlled the game and set the forwards up to penetrate, shoot, and get opportunities."

J-M, which moved up to the 3rd ranking in the state 1A polls this week, dominated from start to finish, sparked by a goal from Luis Arellano off a feed from Alblardo Ramirez.

"That first goal was extremely important in setting the tone of the game and putting the Eagles behind and giving us room to move," added Cuadros. "When you get a team down you want to keep them down."

The Jets tacked on its second goal moments later when Everardo Morales sprinted down the left wing wit the ball and lofted a shot into the net over the EM goalie who had drifted out too far.

"I’m so proud of Evi, he saw the keeper make a mistake and burned him with it with a perfect soft touch chip over his head for a goal," said Cuadros.

Like father, like son

Brent Geiberger, like his dad, wins GGCC

By Eliot Duke

FOREST OAKS – Brent Geiberger turned back the clock on Sunday at the Chyrsler Classic of Greensboro.

Brent took home more than a check after his final round of 66 earned him a two-stroke victory at the CCG.

By winning, Brent joined his dad, Al Geiberger, on the list of previous CCG winners, becoming the only father-son duo to win the same event.

"It’s pretty neat," said Geiberger after his four-day total of 270 held off Michael Allen by two strokes. "Especially to be able to put my name on a trophy with my dad."

Al Geiberger won at Sedgefield, another site of the CCG, 28 years ago.

After the final round, Brent received the ball his father used at that same tournament in 1976, along with a check for $828,000, a two-year tour exemption, and a new car.

"It’s wonderful to see him win the same place I did," Al said on the phone from California. "I know mine was at Sedgefield, but it’s unbelievable that this many years later, Brent could win the same event."
