Northwood men win Mid-East Cross Country regionals By Don Beane ROANOKE RAPIDS – Crown the Northwood boy’s cross country team Mid-East Regional champions. The Charger harriers rolled into Roanoke Rapids on Saturday morning blistered the field by taking three of the top six spots to compile 33 points to best runner-up and Mid-State 2A foe Cedar Ridge’s 52. Gray’s Creek came in third with a 104, Eastern Alamance fourth with a 110, and host Roanoke Rapids fifth with a 137. Taylor Adams paced the Northwood ground assault on Saturday by blistering the course with a time of 16:46. Not surprising was the fact that Adams had to hold off a Cedar Ridge runner to capture the regional crown. What was surprising was that Noah Mace, who won the Mid-State 2A title just a week earlier in Pittsboro, ran a 17:10 to win third place, while teammate Alexis Torre rolled through the course in 16:46 to challenge Adams for the win.
Chargers survive 2 overtime thriller By Don Beane HILLSBORO – It wasn’t easy here on Wednesday night, but in the end Northwood got what it came for and that was win. In thrilling fashion, the Chargers outlasted Mid-State 2A foe Cedar Ridge 3-2 in double-overtime to close the 2004 league season at a perfect 12-0. Northwood, ranked 9th in the state entering this weeks playoffs, moves to 17-3-1 on the year with the victory and now receives a first round bye in the state 2A playoffs before battling the survivor of Tarboro (14-4-2) and Southern Vance (7-8) in Pittsboro at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night. Against the Red Wolves, sophomore Keith Grose scored what was unquestionably the biggest goal of his young career at Northwood in the second overtime to propel the Chargers to the thrilling 3-2 win. Grose found the net past CR goalie David Burns in the last minute of the 2nd OT for the game-winner.
