• Carl Ernst, author of Following Mohammed: Rethinking Islam in the Modern World, will speak Tuesday, November 16 at 7:30 pm at the Pittsboro Memorial Liberty, 158 West Street, in the Reeves Auditorium. Specialist in religious studies at UNC-CH, he has recently been featured in the News and Observer. His book is being published by the UNC Press. |

• The Friends of the Pittsboro Memorial Library’ art gallery show for November is a display of art created by Chatham Arts Open Studio participants. The exhibit will include works of artists new to the studio tour and photographs by Dr. John Shillito. For more information, call 542-3524. |
| • The Goldston Area Rescue Squad is having their annual portrait fund drive this year. Each family that pledges this year will receive a free 10x13 canvas family portrait. Proceeds are going toward new equipment. |

• The Chatham County Public Health Department and Community Diabetes Advocates are holding a diabetes support group on November 8 at 6:30 pm at the Family Resource Center, 225 Chatham Square in Siler City. Topic will be healthy eating during the holidays. Support group is for all individuals affected by diabetes including family and friends. Childcare will be available. | • “How to Identify Substance Abuse Problems in our Community: An Educational presentation,” November 6, from 2-4 pm at the Chatham Family Resource Center (225 Chatham Square, Siler City), presented by Dr. Mario Soto. Presentation will be in Spanish with English interpretation, open to all community members. Refreshments and childcare provided. Free. | • The Alpha Delta Kappa, International Sorority for Women Educators, will hold their second annual ADK yard sale at the Siler City Elementary School cafeteria on November 6 from 6 am to 11 am. All proceeds will benefit the ADK scholarship fund which supports Chatham County students. |
| • The topic of growing fruit in the home garden will be the topic of a pair of classes offered on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 5:45 to 8:00 pm, November 8 and 9 in the auditorium of the Agriculture Building in downtown Pittsboro. Al Cooke, Agricultural Extension Agent for Chatham County Center of the N. C. Cooperative Extension Service. Pre-registration is required by November 3. Classes are open to the public. | • The Jordan-Matthews PTA will meet on Monday, November 8 at 6:30 pm at JM in the media center/library. Deb McManus, chairman of the Chatham County School Board, will present the program. Mr. Cox will be presenting an update of the beautification project. |

• J.S. Waters Fall Festival will be held Friday, 11-05-04. Fun for all ages, Hotdog supper, 5:30 – 8:00 pm. Games for kindergarten through adult. Auction begins at 8 pm with theme baskets for Thanksgiving, Christmas, fall gardening and camping. Proceeds will be used to purchase K-2 playground equipment. |
| • The Ruth Pauley Lecture Series continues on Tuesday, November 9 at 7:30 pm in Owens Auditorium on the Sandhills Community College campus in Pinehurst with a speech by Dr. Fatos Tarifa, Ambassador of the Republic of Albania to the United States.
