School district proposal sparks

parents’ concerns

By Kara Sumner

Parents gathered at Monday night’s Chatham County Board of Education’s meeting at Siler City Elementary to express their concerns with the redistricting of Virginia Cross and Siler City Elementary Schools.

To preface public comment, superintendent Dr. Ann Hart said the options being presented were preliminary.

"The board will not make any decisions tonight," she said.

The board did, however withdraw one plan from the options being considered before allowing public comment. Plan ES 2 – which attempted to make the districts more racially balanced – was eliminated from consideration. An additional plan derived from ES 2 was also removed: K8 2.

"Right now there is a case pending before the Supreme Court looking at…whether schools can district based on race," said vice-chair of the board, Deb McManus. "For the time being, I think we need to withdrawal ES 2 from consideration."

Though two of the five proposals were rejected before public comment, a number of parents voiced their opinion.

"You shouldn’t have to lose something to realize what it was," said Silk Hope parent, Victor Knight. "Silk Hope is a community where kids learn, run, and play together. In today’s world that’s a very rare thing."

Knight was not the only parent who voiced concern about separating kids by redistricting.

"I just want you to take into account that when you break up a community, you break up a family," said Jodie Suits, a Silk Hope parent.

McManus said she understood parents’ concerns.

"It’s your life," she said. "They’re your kids. It’s your school."

Heavy wind, rain pelt region

By Angela Delp

Rainfall and high winds caused power outages and flooding throughout Chatham County last week.

Chatham received approximately nine inches of rain in November. Much of that precipitation fell last week when a storm system brought damaging winds and heavy rain to the region on Wednesday.

Wind speeds during last week’s storm in Chatham County peaked at 17 miles per hour, according to Marcie Katcher of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Weather Service.

Rainfall and high wind speeds caused a number of incidents in the county.

Emergency responders reported power outages and fallen trees in parts of the county.

"We had several trees down Tuesday night and they were continuing to fall Wednesday morning," said Tony Tucker, director of Chatham County’s Emergency Management.

"We’ve had to close a few roads due to low areas and high water," Tucker said during the storm.

The weather was favorable with temperatures higher than normal for this time of year, but that didn’t deter the large crowd from lining the streets downtown to wait for Santa Claus.

New board takes office next week

By Randall Rigsbee

Next week, a trio of new county commissioners will take office.

George Lucier, Carl Thompson and Tom Vanderbeck are scheduled to be sworn into office Monday, Dec. 4.

The incoming commissioners replace outgoing chairman Bunkey Morgan and vice chairman Tommy Emerson, who lost their re-election bids in the May Democratic primary, and Carl Outz, who didn’t seek re-election.

The new commissioners, who will take their places alongside commissioners Patrick Barnes and Mike Cross, will undertake their first order of business at the 6 p.m. meeting, which will be held in the large Superior Courtroom in Pittsboro.

Immediately after the meeting, commissioners will hold a reception in the Agriculture Building Auditorium in Pittsboro. The public is invited to the event to meet and talk with the new board.

Among the items of business the board will undertake on Monday after the formal swearing-in are a discussion of the county’s Economic Development Commission (EDC) and a contract for the county attorney.

Longtime county attorney Bob Gunn announced last week he was retiring as the county’s attorney.
