Eastern girls take care of Lady Jets

By Anthony Holderied

RAMSEUR – Jordan-Matthews was looking to get its 2003-2004 season off on a good note after a disappointing 6-19 season a year ago that was marred with lackluster offensive performances.

Unfortunately for J-M, a two-field goal performance in the first half of Thursday’s season opener at Eastern Randolph doesn’t normally get the job done. It wasn’t a particularly pretty evening on the scoreboard for the Lady Jets who were dumped 70-38 in their first outing.

Of course Eastern Randolph, one of the top 3-A girls teams in the state, was a giant obstacle in front of a much smaller Jordan-Matthews team. The Lady Wildcats dominated the rebounding contest and controlled much of the scoring in the paint with little resistance.

Eastern Randolph (1-0) got most of its roster into the contest in the second half after opening up a first-half lead of 35-13 over the Lady Jets. The Lady Wildcats poured it open in the fourth quarter with 23 points, coming mostly from the bench.

Saving the ball from a goal . . .

Northwood goalie Steven Kay saves a shot on goal by a Swansboro player in last Wednesday nights eastern regional finals.  Kasy had several saves in the match, but the Pirates of Swansboro managed to score three goals on the junior.

Swansboro Pirates edge Northwood 3-1 for Eastern Regional title

By Anthony Holderied

SWANSBORO – For the second straight year, Northwood was forced to contend with swamp-like conditions and one of state’s best soccer programs in what proved to be its last game of the year.

The Chargers fell to Swansboro once again in the playoffs, losing 3-1 in Saturday’s regional final of the NCHSAA state championships. The loss marks the second year in a row that Northwood stopped one game short of the finals by losing to Swansboro on a sloppy, rain-soaked field.

Advancing to the 2-A state title game for the sixth straight year were the Pirates, who have had Northwood’s number in the playoffs the last three years. In last year’s regional final, the Chargers were ousted 1-0 at home under the same undesirable conditions.

But as both teams were forced to play under the same elements, Swansboro has proved to be the better team on both occasions.

Saturday’s performance for the Pirates was particularly impressive, as they staked to a dominant 2-0 halftime lead and never really let Northwood in the game.
