Jeff Davis photos Two more wins . . . Northwood hosted Eastern Alamance in the state soccer playoffs last Wednesday, winning 4-1 in Pittsboro. Saturday the Chargers traveled to Roanoke Rapids where the Northwood team battled to a scoreless tie after regulation play. Northwood then won the match 3-2 on penalty kicks. With the two wins, Northwood now travels to take on number one seed Swansboro in a Wednesday night state semifinal match. A win will propel Northwood to the state championships this weekend in Cary. Chargers win 3-2 on penalty kicks By Anthony Holderied ROANOKE RAPIDS– Northwood is right back in the place it wanted to be in at the start of the year– in the regional final and facing Swansboro. The Chargers advanced to that plateau for the second year in a row when they defeated Roanoke Rapids on the road in the fourth round of the NCHSAA 2-A state playoffs. In one of the best matches in 2-A soccer all year long, the Chargers mustered up more energy than their top-seeded Northern Carolina Conference opponent, outlasting the Yellow Jackets in penalty kicks to win a 0-0 overtime classic.
Bears grapplers get 60-24 opening season win over NW By Anthony Holderied BEAR CREEK – Chatham Central wrestling opened up what the Bears hope to be another dominant season on Thursday. Central started the year with a punishing victory over county rival Northwood 60-24. The Bears literally pinned the Chargers in Bear Creek, taking eight of their 10 wins by way of pin. Central won a total of 10 out of 14 matches, while Northwood’s four victories were all by way of pin. The Bears had some questions to answer coming into the year, after losing their all-conference trio of seniors Jake Sanders, Justin Fields and Shane Zimmerman. That trio started the 2002 season with a first-round loss in the Green Hope Duals, before taking four straight subsequent victories to finish the season-opening meet.
Albemarle knocks Jets from playoffs By Anthony Holderied ALBEMARLE – Jordan-Matthews finally fell in a dramatic match for the ages on Wednesday. The Jets saw their glorious late-season run come to a sobering finish when they ran into hated Yadkin Valley Conference rival Albemarle in the third round of the NCHSAA playoffs. The Bulldogs, previously owning Jordan-Matthews by pulling out victories in the teams’ only four meetings, did it again in dramatic fashion to oust the Jets 1-0 and send them packing. Albemarle’s Jake Stanton headed-in the game-winner on a loose ball that was deflected in front of the J-M net. Stanton leaned in to touch the ball past Jet goalkeeper Roberto Lopez, and the lobbed ball dropped into the upper left corner proving to be the death blow with four minutes left in the game. "This was a real hard defeat for the guys to take," J-M Coach Paul Cuadros said. "Both teams played their hearts out tonight and it’s too bad that both teams can’t advance. We knew that whoever scored the first goal would win the game it turned out that way."
