Fearrington residents

don't want to be a town

By Randall Rigsbee

Fearrington residents have rejected a proposal to move forward with possible incorporation.

The results of a poll of Fearrington residents were revealed Sunday, Nov. 13 at the Fearrington Homeowners Association’s (FHA) annual meeting, with those voting against outweighing those residents who favored the plan.

According to the FHA, 1,059 residents participated in the preference poll, with 560 (53 percent) rejecting further study of the proposal and 499 (47 percent) voting in favor.

Fearrington residents have considered the possibility of incorporating the community, which is situated at the rapidly developing halfway point between Pittsboro and Chapel Hill, for a number of years but the effort gained steam recently when an incorporation committee of the FHA prepared a 93-page report on the plan. The report outlined pros and cons of incorporation.

This year, possible incorporation was discussed at three homeowners’ association meetings, but opinion always appeared divided.

Authorities capture prison escapee

By Cara McDonough

An inmate who escaped while on work assignment in Siler City in late October was found Tuesday morning in Baltimore after authorities pulled a vehicle over for speeding, according to the North Caroling Department of Corrections (DCO).

Sean Wheeler, 38, an escaped prisoner from the minimum security Randolph Correctional Center, was discovered after the vehicle he was riding in was pulled over by the Maryland Transportation Authority Police on Interstate 95 Tuesday morning at about 10:00 a.m. said Keith Acree, spokesperson for the DOC.

The driver of the vehicle, a friend of Wheeler’s, was speeding, and both men weren’t wearing seatbelts, he said.

After authorities questioned the two men, they became suspicious of their stories, ran their names and discovered that Wheeler was wanted in North Carolina.

Wheeler, a Greensboro resident, was convicted on a second-degree kidnapping charge in September 2002 and was sentenced to six years in minimum security prison.

He was working with other prisoners on Harold Andrews Road near the county line, on Monday, October 24, when he ran into the woods at about 1:45 p.m.

The DOC has been looking for him since his escape.

Wheeler will be held in the Baltimore County Jail until he can be extradited to North Carolina, Acree said.

Moving tributes, memorial additions mark service for Veterans Day

By Cara McDonough

The unveiling of new wings recently added to the Goldston Veterans’ Memorial Friday night was a big reason for the crowd that surrounded the memorial library.

A bigger reason, though, was the shared personal stories that made the fourth annual Chatham County Veterans’ Day Celebration a true salute to those who’ve served our country.

Noted guests at the ceremony included Congressman Bob Etheridge, State Senator Bob Atwater, State House Representative Joe Hackney, the guest speaker, county commissioner Mike Cross, the Rev. Sampson Buie, Jr., and the Rev. Larry Hutchins.

Etheridge presented a flag to the town at the outset of the two-hour service, which began at 6 p.m.

There was plenty of time for socializing and enjoying the hot dogs, coffee, baked goods and other food provided by members of the community after a moving ceremony that included personal stories, tributes and prayer.

The new wings on the memorial feature the names of 50 local veterans. Their names were read aloud during the service.

County resident Randy Beard spoke personally about one of those names. His son, Brad, was killed in the Iraq war at the age of 22.

“Because you cared enough to comfort a soldier’s family, I’d like to tell you about Brad,” Beard said.

The group listened silently to Beard’s story. He talked about his son’s reaction to September 11 and his decision to join the Army. He talked about his son’s accomplishments, and he talked about learning of his son’s death on October 4, 2004. Many in the crowd cried.

A burst of fall color . . .

A single maple leaf hangs from it’s limb at Jordan Lake recently on a brisk fall day. The fall color has finally come to the Piedmont area, bringing not only the color, but a lot of work to do. Raking has become a popular weekend chore to take care of now that they are falling off the trees.

Judge Barber to step down from bench

By Cara McDonough

Chatham and Orange counties’ Superior Court Judge Wade Barber announced recently that he will retire early next year.

Barber, 61, has been in the position for eight years.

Gov. Mike Easley will have to appoint a replacement for Judge Barber since his term goes until the end of 2006. The replacement will have to run for a regular eight-year term next November.

Superior Court Judge Carl Fox, sworn in last March, will become the new senior judge for Orange and Chatham counties.

While Barber, who discussed his plans in an interview this week, does plan to spend more time with his children - Claire, who’s expecting twins in December, and Elizabeth, who’s in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica, - he’s not slowing down too much.

“I plan to return to the practice of law, probably in Pittsboro, trying to help people with their problems,” Barber said in a telephone interview Tuesday. “But first I plan to send next year working as a volunteer legal aid lawyer in Pittsboro.”
