Perry carries Northwood to a win over Currituck By Anthony Holderied BARCO – A rare trip down to the coast on Friday proved to be well worth the ride for the Charger football program. Northwood pulled off a monumental 25-14 victory at Currituck– its first state playoff win in 30 years. The 11th-seeded Chargers (8-4) battled the quirky nuances of the North Carolina State High School Association, as they were sent all the way to Barco to play a Currituck team with a deplorable 3-8 record, yet was given the sixth seed and a home game. Nonetheless, Northwood took care of business on the road, capturing its first playoff win since 1973 while earning an unexpected home game in Friday’s second round against 14th-seeded Western Guilford.
J-M upsets Elkin in soccer playoffs By Anthony Holderied ELKIN – Jordan-Matthews surpassed its expectations for the second straight year, earning a pair of victories in the first two rounds of the NCHSAA 1-A state playoffs. The Jets knocked off East Wilkes 5-1 at Siler City in Wednesday’s first-round, but really made their mark with a gutty 2-1 victory at Elkin on Saturday evening. The number-two seeded Jets (15-7) in just their second season of existence, took their program one step further on Saturday, capturing the second-round contest over top-seeded Elkin to advance to the third round for the first time ever. "Last year was the first year of the program and even though this team is younger and there are new faces on board, this year’s team not only duplicated last year’s achievements but surpassed them," Jordan-Matthews Coach Paul Cuadros said of his team which won a first-round playoff contest last year before falling in the second round to Polk County.
Overtime goal propels Northwood By Anthony Holderied ELON – Northwood completed an all-important three-game season sweep of Western Alamance, with the most important of the three coming in Saturday’s third-round of the NCHSAA 2-A state playoffs. Northwood’s Kelsey Lenhardt drove a shot from 30-yards out past Western goalkeeper Connor Twiss with just two minutes remaining in the final overtime period to lift the Chargers into Wednesday’s third round. With the victory, Northwood earned the honor of hosting a third-round contest against Mid-State rival Eastern Alamance. The Chargers have also previously defeated the Eagles in the regular season’s two matches. |
