DAC honors two Jet athletes

SILER CITY – The Downtown Athletic Club held its third annual banquet on Monday night to honor its sponsors to the Jordan-Matthews athletic program and to present its 2003-2004 Male and Female Award winners.

Helen Mathias and Michael McMaster were chosen as the Female and Male DAC award winners for the 2003-2004 school year.

According to Jordan-Matthews Athletic Director John Phillips, the Jet standouts were more than deserving of the awards.

"You couldn’t find two better ambassadors for Jordan-Matthews High School, they represented the school as well as possible in their four years here," said Phillips. "Helen has that infectious smile and has always been mannerly and polite. And Michael is as polite a gentleman as you will find anywhere."

Mathias, who played basketball and softball at J-M, gained statewide notoriety on the tennis court during her career at Jordan-Matthews, leading the Jets to a pair of 1A Dual Team state titles while also capturing back-to-back single’s titles during her junior and senior seasons.

"Anyone that’s been around Helen knows how hard she’s worked, and that’s been exhibited with her success in all three sports, especially tennis," pointed out Phillips. "Just as important has been her academic work where she’ll graduate in the top 10 percent of her class."

Phillips stepping down as J-M basketball coach

By Don Beane

SILER CITY – Last Tuesday marked the end of the John Phillips coaching tenure at Jordan-Matthews High School as the 20-year veteran considered who’s considered to be one of the best in the state of North Carolina officially stepped down as men’s basketball at the Siler City school.

Contrary to circulating rumors Phillips is not leaving J-M and will continue his teaching and Athletic Director duties for the Jets.

"I’m not quite that old yet," said Phillips joking about being able to retire. "I still have at least seven more years to go before that can happen."

Phillips made the announcement last Tuesday after gathering his team and informing them of his decision, obviously a tough task.

"I’m going to miss the real strong relationships you have with the kids," pointed out Phillips. "I’ve been fortunate to have kids who have wanted to compete and work hard. I can honestly say that the kids are as easy to coach now as they were 20 years ago, and I think that says something about our students at Jordan-Matthews because you don’t hear a lot of coaches say that a lot now a days."

Northwood's magical year finally over

By Eliot Duke

GREENSBORO – No Northwood soccer team had ever gone as far as this year’s Chargers squad.

Under rookie coach Julie Mason, NW accomplished more this past season than any other previous Chargers team, losing just a pair of games on their way to the fourth round of the NCHSAA soccer playoffs.

Friday night, however, NW got a lesson on exactly how much more it takes to advance all the way to a championship.

Early goals to start both halves by the Western Guilford Hornets paved the way for a disappointing 3-1 loss for the Chargers, ending one memorable season.

Coming in, NW was ranked fourth in the state, while the Hornet’s were rated number one.

"Nobody expected us to come this far," said Mason. "This season has been in a sense like a Cinderella story. It’s been a good run."

The Hornet’s Nikki Dumenchich used the game as her own personal showcase, scoring all three goals for WG.
