Northwood's relay team wins 2nd in state meet

Staff reports

RALEIGH – The Northwood Chargers had a chance to close out their track season on a positive note at the NCHSAA state finals.

An entire year of hard work paid off for the Chargers, as the boys 4 x 800 relay team finished second in the state to Reidsville with a time of 8:17.13, culminating a day in which may NW athletes performed well.

The Chargers came in 10th overall in a field of 54 schools.

North Rowan claimed the 2A championship, totaling 98.50 points. NW earned 22 points.

Greg Smith proved he was one of the fastest 2A sprinters in the state, blazing the 100 meter dash in a lightning quick 11.20 seconds, earning him 10th place overall.

Willie Perry from West Caldwell won with a time of 10.85 seconds.

Neil Barnes nearly equaled his teammate in the 200 meter dash, scorching a time of 23.23 seconds for an 11th place finish.

Southern Guilford’s Ryan Lea paced the field with a time of 21.97 seconds.

Herculean effort not for Bears

By Eliot Duke

ROBBINS – It would have taken a Herculean effort by the Chatham Central Bears to knock off the undefeated North Moore Mustangs at home in the semi-finals of the Yadkin Valley 1A conference tournament Thursday night.

The Bears needed to play perfectly in the field, and hope NM was a little off.

Neither happened, and CC suffered a 11-1 humbling to the Mustangs.

"We didn’t play perfect tonight," said CC coach Keenan Leichty. "It’s a mental thing. We have played well against them before. The last couple of games, we haven’t been on top mentally."

The Bears defense made a couple of really good plays on defense, but, at the same time, made some errors on very routine plays.

"We know they are going to hit the ball, our pitchers know they swing the bats, so we have to be ready to make plays," Leichty said. "We just didn’t make those plays, and it opens up the floodgates."

Against a team as talented and ready to swing the bats as the Mustangs are, four and five outs in an inning is a remedy for disaster.
