• An all-day Alternative Forest Income Workshop will be held on Friday, May 21, 2004, 9:00 am until 4 pm. Registration begins at 8:30 am. Workshop will be in the auditorium downstairs in the County Agriculture Building in Pittsboro and is being conducted by the Chatham County Center of the NC Cooperative Extension Service.  For details, registration and fee information, contact Jane Tripp, 542-8202.

• Due to numerous poultry LT outbreaks in Central North Carolina the Area Poultry Conference originally scheduled for May 27 in Siler City has been cancelled and will be rescheduled later. 

• Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom will meet May 22 at 10 am at Friends Meeting House in Chapel Hill. We plan to evaluate goals set earlier, progress made,  and discuss future events and activities. Members and guests are welcome. Beth Kricker, (919) 542-5239 – bethKR@mindspring.com.

• NC’s Eastern Region, will present the first State of the Region Sumposium, “NCER: Meeting the Demands of the Changing Economy,” from 9 am to 2 pm on May 24 at the NC Global Transpark Education and Training Center. • On Sunday, May 23 at 2 pm, author Sheila Kay Adams will read from her new novel, My Old True Love, at McIntyre’s Fine Books and Book Ends. Reading are free and open to the public. 

• Free Parent Workshop at Teen Works Teen Center (505 MLK, Jr. Blvd, Siler City) will be May 24 from 6 pm to 7.   Topic will be  Getting Ready for Summer. Child care will be provided. For information call, Elizabeth Vickery, 919-542-5155. 

• May 22, meet astronomer at Ebenezer Beach from 9 pm to 11 to view Mars, Saturn and a crescent moon in close conjunction. Venus and Jupiter will also be visible. 

• May 22 at 2 pm at  Parker’s Creek Beach, learn about the animals which call Jordan Llake “home”. Entrance fee will be charged.

• Saturday, May 22, from 3-6 pm, Karen and David Jessee will host a House party to benefit Chatham Habitat for Humanity Proceeds go to build a home for a Chatham County in need of affordable housing. Vocals by Caryl Thomason price and a reading by Carol Lautier.  Call 542-0794 for more information. 

• The African American Caucus of the Chatham County Democratic party will hold its first county-wide meeting May 27 at 7 pm at the Pittsboro Memorial Library.  The concept of the Caucus is similar to caucuses held around the country. Citizens come together to discuss and make decisions on pertinent issued facing their community.  For more information, contact Ms. Ellison at 837-8738. 

• A round table discussion will be held on Saturday, May 22, at 10 am at Alston Chapel United Holy Church in Pittsboro. This is being held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Brown vs Board of Education Supreme Court decision. Leading the discussions will be Al McSurley, civil rights activist, attorney, Dr. Jarvis Hall and Mary Harris. For more information call 542-4111. 

• “Snack and Chat” about your children will be held May 22, Saturday, 10 am to 10, at the Pittsboro Presbyterian Church, 92 East Street. This session will focus on “What a young child needs’, guest speaker Dr. Katherine Leslie, sponsored by Family Outreach and Support Services of the Chatham County Health Department.  Free transportation and childcare, if you need them.  Call 9219-545-8399. 

• Music, Friday, May 21, Bynum General Store, Downtown Bynum, 7 pm, no admission fee. Will be outdoors, weather permitting, bring your chair, and blanket or quilt. The Dixieland Family Hour will present music from the recent production of “Millworker”, along with the Big Fat Gap, a young Bluegrass band.

• Pre-School Storytime at McIntyre’s Fine Books, Fearrington Village every Wednesday at 10:30 am. Free and open to the public. 

• May 23, 2 pm at Parker’s Creek Beach, meet a ranger for a presentation on the reptiles of Jordan Lake.
