J-M wins team, individual 1-A golf titles By Eliot Duke PINEHURST – There’s no doubt about it – the Jordan-Matthews Jets are the best 1A high-school golf team in North Carolina, again. The Jets erased any questions about winning on their home course, traveling to The Club at Longleaf and breaking the 36-hole state 1A scoring record with a overall of 614. Allegheny shot a 617 two years ago. "This feels really good, winning back-to-back state titles," said Jets coach Patrick Bass. The record setting performance earned J-M its second consecutive golf championship, but this one was especially sweet. As the defending champions, the Jets faced the whole season with a bulls-eye on their back. J-M, however, never wavered, facing every challenge head-on. From the trip to Myrtle Beach several weeks ago to the undefeated season in the Yadkin Valley 1A conference, the Jets proved they had the desire to make another run at a title. "We did a lot of first’s this year," Bass said. "It was the first undefeated conference season. We won at Albemarle for the first time. It was the first time we led after the first day of the state tournament."
Chargers stampede Mid-State foes By Don Beane PITTSBORO – The Northwood girls concluded the 2004 regular season with a pair of 4-0 Mid-State 2A wins over Randleman and Graham last week. With the victories, the Chargers successfully ran the table in the league to finish with a perfect 12-0 mark while also compiling an overall record of 17-2-1. "I’m very pleased with the season we’ve had, the girls have really stepped up and improved their ball skills and speed of play from the start of the season to the point we are at now," said NW coach Julie Mason. "One of my goals is to see every girl improve their skill level throughout the season and I feel like that’s been accomplished." Versus Graham last Monday, the Lady Chargers took to the road and completely dominated the Red Devils by the 4-0 count. Kate McDuffie and Katherine Johnson each found the net twice to spearhead the Northwood offensive attack.
Brown, Jets fight off Green Dragons By Eliot Duke SILER CITY – Jordan-Matthews traveled a difficult road this season, as the Jets attempted to mold themselves into a solid softball team. After playing one of the more difficult non-conference schedules in recent memory, the battle-tested Jets began the Yadkin Valley 1A conference tournament against the West Davidson Dragons. All the hard work is really paying off now, and J-M is playing its best softball of the year, beating the Dragons, 4-1, to advance to the semi-finals. "We’re definitely playing our best right now," Jets coach Ray Stout said "We made some changes midway through the season that has improved our defense and helped us start winning." Three first inning runs gave pitcher, Kailee Brown, the breathing room she needed to stymie the SD lineup to the tune of just two hits. "I was feeling a little rough and shaky," said Brown. "Today was only the second time I have pitched in the past week. This win feels really good. I feel like we can do really good in this conference."
