Snow hits Chatham . . .again . . .

Thank goodness it was just a few inches and not the 17 that some folks received.  The snow didn't cause any problems, but knocked students out of school Friday.  Above, a horse looks on as his picture is taken in a snow covered scene on Devils Tramping Ground Road near Harpers Cross Roads last Thursday.

Would involve both Siler City and Pittsboro

New highway corridor being looked at in area

By Melissa Ledgerwood

The feasibility of the US 64-NC 49 corridor is being studied, which would involve both Pittsboro and Siler City.

In 2002, the North Carolina Department of Transportation invited local officials from towns located along US 64 from Raleigh to Siler City to discuss a corridor study.

Jack Meadows Director and Community Development in Siler City was chosen as a member of the corridor development team.

The reason for the study is to identify and suggest improvements to non-interstate roadways that have potential to improve interstate passengerw and freight mobility.

First a consultant team was chosen to produce the corridor study.  In 2003, PBS&J was awarded the contract.

Siler City, Pittsboro Police Department giving away gunlocks

By Cara Rotondaro

The Pittsboro Police Department is taking an active stance on gun safety.

With the help of Project ChildSafe, a national organization that helps ensure safe firearm ownership and storage, the department will be giving out free gun safety locks to gun owners – no questions asked.

“We’re providing these to any gun owner, and if it prevents one shooting than I think this program is a success,” said Detective Tom McGinty.

The department has received 700 gunlocks total: 500 for large caliber firearms, and 200 for small caliber.

Any gun owner can receive a free safety lock at the Police Department from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on any week day, said McGinty.

The Siler City Police Department will also be providing the free gunlocks and safety kits.

The gunlocks will be available to the public on a first come first serve basis beginning March 1 at the Police Department.

A press release issued by Project ChildSafe said that over 500,000 free gunlocks will be distributed throughout North Carolina through an agreement with Governor Mike Easley, the NC Department of Crime Control and Public Safety and local law enforcement agencies.

This effort was funded by a $50 million grant from the Department of Justice. Nearly 20 million free gunlocks and firearm safety materials will be provided to families in all 50 states.

Public hearing set on compact rules

By Randall Rigsbee

Not all the details of Chatham County’s proposed Compact Communities Ordinance have been resolved, but the public will have a chance to voice opinions on the proposed rules later this month.

Commissioners scheduled a March 23 public hearing on the proposed rules, which are designed to regulate large mixed-use developments and have been in the planning for nearly two years.

County commissioners on Monday spent several hours reviewing the Planning Board’s most recent draft of the ordinance, which planners arrived at over the course of two meetings last month.

Most of the Planning Board‘s recommendations to commissioners regarding the draft were reached by unanimous vote and county commissioners retained most of what the Planning Board had recommended.

Commissioners did, however, include in the current draft one component on which planners could not agree: a provision that allows commissioners to waive some of the rules.

The Planning Board had split on the waiver issue, voting 6-4 to remove it from the ordinance.
