J-M holds on to win at South Stanly By Don Beane NORWOOD – Jordan-Matthews hit the road on Friday evening and took a key 5-4 victory over a gritty South Stanly bunch in Yadkin Valley 1A baseball action. The Jets improved to 2-2 in league play and to 3-4 overall with the win. "This was a good win for us after dropping that tough game at home against Thomasville last week," said J-M coach Jimmy Warfford. "Anytime you can win on the road in the conference it gives you a big lift." Warfford was most pleased with his club’s errorless play on defense. "We made the routine plays and that was the difference," pointed out Warfford. "Everyone is so even in our league that if you make too many mistakes it’ll cost you a game." Jordan-Matthews jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in its opening at bat. Tristian Burnette, who went 2-for-3 with three runs scored on the night, led things off with a single. After Burnette swiped second, Matthew Hinson sent the J-M leadoff man home with a sharp base hit. In the third, the Jets tagged Rebel starter Andy Salmon for two more runs, ignited by another single from Burnette, who was advanced to second on a bunt by Garrett Parks.

Central rips North Moore in 5, 16-2 By Eliot Duke BEAR CREEK – It may be early in the baseball season, but the Chatham Central Bear were already facing a must win game. Against the North Moore Mustangs Monday night, the Bears faced the possibility of dropping their first three conference games in as many tries if they couldn’t find a way to get a win. Being that CC hardly played any baseball over the past week due to bad weather, Bears coach Bill Slaughter didn’t really know what to expect . Slaughter just may have stumbled onto something. CC swung a big bat and pitcher Ryan Lambert made it stick as the Bears pounded NM, 16-2. "We didn’t practice or do anything last week," Slaughter said. "We got only four innings against East Montgomery before it was called. So we’re not going to practice again. Just kidding." DJ Allen and Cole Hudson went four-for-four with six runs scored, pacing a CC attack that generated 13 hits. "We swung the bats much better," said Slaughter. "The kids came through and hit the ball. We were also really disciplined at the plate." The offensive support was more than enough for Lambert, as the right-hander yielded one run in five innings, striking out eight. "This is the first time he’s threw the ball since the J-M game, two weeks ago," Slaughter said. "He pitched very well today." Lambert also went had a hit and drove in three runs. Despite the score, it was only a one-run game going into the bottom of the third inning.
