Man indicted in Feb. 25 stabbing death of mother

By Joseph Pardington

Bobby Lee Person of Siler City was indicted on Monday in the stabbing death of his mother, said Captain Charles Gardner of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.

Person’s indictment by a grand jury means that he will stand trial for the charges.

Person was arrested February 25 and was charged with first degree murder and felony motor vehicle larceny.

He is suspected of stabbing his 53-year-old mother, Colene Person, to death on February 25 before stealing her car, reports said.

"He was indicted yesterday," Gardner said on Tuesday. "He’s still in jail under no bond."

Person, 28, of 220 Fletcher Siler Road, Siler City was the second person arrested for murder this year on the same street. The two homicides are not related, said Major Gary Blankenship of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.

Residents of the street have expressed their concern over the two unrelated cases, however.

Performing arts center proposed for Chatham

By Randall Rigsbee

The planners proposing a "multi-cultural rural life museum" to be built at the Chatham County fairgrounds in Pittsboro have broadened the original scope of the project to include a performing arts center.

If built, the center would be the only one of its kinds in Chatham County, providing residents with a central performing arts venue.

Margie Ellison, a member of the board of directors of the Chatham County Agricultural and Industrial Fair Association and co-chair of the committee planning the museum, met with county commissioners Monday to discuss the project.

In January, fair association representatives presented plans for the museum and asked for support from the county in the form of a $75,000 grant.

County to resume ISP incentive talk

By Randall Rigsbee

Chatham County commissioners, who last month discussed in closed session a proposal to rescind a previously approved monetary incentive for a controversial mining operation, will revisit the topic next week.

Commissioners discussed the matter during a Monday work session, but only long enough to schedule the item for further discussion on March 19 when the board convenes for another work session and meeting.

Commissioners say the discussion on the 19th will likely be conducted in a session closed to the public, allowable by state law for certain issues including financial matters and attorney/client discussion.

In interviews last week, county commissioners vice chair George Lucier and county manager Charlie Horne confirmed that commissioners last month discussed the possibility of reversing a decision made by the previous Board of Commissioners last fall to offer a $3 million incentive to ISP Minerals Inc.

The Maryland-based company is considering establishing a 1,076-acre quarry to mine green stone in Siler City’s extraterritorial zoning jurisdiction.

Town gets tough on trash

By Angela Delp

The Town of Siler City is cracking down on nuisances such as overgrown yards and unsightly autos.

Code enforcement officer Tim Riffe was hired by the town board to enforce junk auto and nuisance ordinances.

"Prior to hiring Tim, the only way we could enforce these ordinances was by complaint," said town manager Joel Brower. "Tim works on a variety of things, from junk autos to lack of 911 codes being posted."

Riffe’s job has kept him busy.

Assignments for one day last week alone included tackling grease problems at a Siler City convenience store, condemning a mobile home, issuing a stop work order, responding to trash violations and tagging junk cars for towing.

Riffe condemned a mobile home in Siler City due to lack of water.
