Chatham County falls to TC Spirits

GIBSONVILLE – Patience is a virtue.

Chatham County found that out first hand here on Monday night at Eastern Guilford High School as the Cizzlers waited until after 9:30 p.m. to fire the first pitch to end a six-day layoff in Greensboro Palomino League action.

When the action finally started, the wait was worth it for Chatham County as the locals belted the hapless Southwest Stars 17-4 to improve to 6-7 on the season. The Stars, meanwhile, fall to 0-13 on the summer.

From start to finish, the Cizzlers dominated the action, plating three runs in the opening inning in what was a two-out rally.

Lowman 'back home'

Jets name former player as new head basketball coach

By Don Beane

SILER CITY – P.J. Lowman grew up in the shadows of Jordan-Matthews High School, needing only to look across the street to see the school he frequented almost on a daily basis as a youth.

Now nine years removed from graduating from the Siler City school, the 26-year old Lowman is returning to his alma mater to guide the Jordan-Matthews men’s basketball program.

"Right now it’s kind of surreal, kind of hard to believe," said Lowman on officially becoming head coach at J-M. "I basically grew up at the school and I believe this was what was supposed to happen. It’s hard to turn down a chance to coach your alma mater, especially when it’s regarded as one of the top programs in the state like Jordan-Matthews is."

Replacing legend John Phillips, who retired from coaching last month after a 21-year tenure at J-M which included a 1A state championship, two western North Carolina titles and 332 wins, won’t be easy.

But if anyone has been groomed for the job it’s been Lowman who was a member of the 1995 state championship team at Jordan-Matthews under Phillips.

LAURINBURG – The Chatham County 13 & under Babe Ruth All-Stars were bounced from District 1 play after posting a 1-2 mark over the weekend.

PEMO Stewart 10 CC 5

Chatham County opened District 1 play with a Friday night showdown with host PEMO Stewart.

A slow start was the downfall of the locals which saw PEMO Stewart tallying three runs in each of the first and second innings to race out to a 6-0 advantage.

Following PEMO Stewart adding another run in the fourth, Chatham County began a rally with a four-run outburst to close to within 7-4.

Andrew Jones, Braxton Edmondson and Kyle Lemons opened the fifth with consecutive singles before Clay Cooper ripped a two-run base hit. A single by James Kidd brought home two more runs to cap the Chatham County uprising.

In the sixth the locals pushed across another run to close the deficit to 7-5. Cliff Joyce tripled and later scored on a single by Cooper.

Chatham County would get no closer, however, as PEMO Stewart erupted for three runs to seal the win.
