Chatham Central bears down, slip by Jets By Don Beane SILER CITY– Jason Thompson poured in 10 of his game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter on Friday night to lead Chatham Central to a key 43-38 Yadkin Valley 1A victory over rival Jordan-Matthews at Justice Gymnasium. The win improves the Bears to 3-0 in league play and to 6-5 overall while the Jets fall to 2-1 in conference action and the 4-6 overall. Defense set the tone of the game as the two clubs squared off in yet another classic. Jordan-Matthews raced out a 10-2 lead in the opening frame before Thompson entered the contest after missing the start due to an ankle injury suffered by the senior in the final game of the Glaxo-Smith-Kline U.S. Challenge tournament in Raleigh on Tuesday. J-M star Michael Horton had six early points, but would tally on two more after Thompson entered and the Bears also cut the deficit to 10-7 after one period of play.
Marsh makes the difference in win By Don Beane SILER CITY – Chatham Central coach Gerald Binkley knew his team would be in for a tussle on Friday night when his Lady Bears visited Jordan-Matthews.And the young Jets didn’t disappoint the veteran coach. The two county-rivals locked horns on Friday night in Siler City at Justice Gynmasium with Chatham Central using a pivotal 10-4 spurt in the third quarter before pulling away for a tough 41-30 win. "It was about what we expected, a really tough game," pointed out Binkley. "Coach (Jeff) Stutts always has his girls playing great fundamental defense and we knew it would be a struggle to beat them. It’s a big win for us because they are young and coach Stutts has them getting better and better."
Big third quarter propel Bulldogs By Don Beane THOMASVILLE – Monday night was a huge opportunity for the Chatham Central basketball team as the Bears headed to Thomasville to take on the defending 1A champs with an opportunity to take over a share of first-place in the Yadkin Valley 1A standings by stealing a road win over the favored Bulldogs. That opportunity resembled more of a train wreck when all was said and done. Thomasville (5-0, 8-3) blew open a close game at the half and rolled to an easy 60-42 victory to move into a first-place tie with East Montgomery (3-0, 5-3), which routed Jordan-Matthews 59-33 on Monday evening. Plain and simple the Bears didn’t play well and fell hard to a team which on a good night it could beat.
