Central takes key win over West Davidson

By Don Beane

TYRO – One things for sure, it’s never easy to win on the road at West Davidson.

Friday night proved that point full force as Chatham Central weathered a strong effort by the Green Dragons to take a key 52-50 Yadkin Valley 1A victory back to Bear Creek.

The win kept the Bears locked into the hunt for the Yadkin Valley 1A title and right in the race with Albemarle, East Montgomery, and Jordan-Matthews for one of the top two spots.

"West Davidson is a tough place to play and any win on the road in this conference is big no matter how many points you win by," said CC coach Bill Slaughter after the game. "Coach (Brian) McDade had a good game plan for us and they were determined not to allow Jason (Thompson) many looks."

Slaugther was alluding to the aggressive and physical style employed by the Green Dragons on Thompson, which at times looked like a WWF match down in the paint.

Jets get important 52-47 win over Albemarle

By Don Beane

SILER CITY – Time and time again on Wednesday night it looked as if Jordan-Matthews was going to put Albemarle away.

But to the Bulldogs credit, the Jets never fully salted away the win until junior guard Justin Snipes netted three foul shots in the final :19.8 seconds of the contest to lift J-M to an important 52-47 victory over Albemarle.

The win raised the Jets record to 7-3 in Yadkin Valley play and to 9-8 overall while the Bulldogs fell to 4-4 in the conference and to 9-9 overall.

"It was an important win for us, you have got to win your home games in this conference to even have a chance at a top two or three finish," said J-M head coach John Phillips. "Albemarle is a very good team and it took a strong effort for us to pick up the win."

Lady Chargers manhandle Tiger

By Eliot Duke

RANDLEMAN – A staple of any good basketball team is the ability to be diversified. A team that isn’t one-dimensional can play fits on its opposition..

Tuesday night against the Randleman Tigers, the Northwood Chargers proved that they are a team that can go inside and out, and may just be finding their stride.

Britteny Stone controlled the paint and Tara Scurlock went over the top in leading the Chargers to a convincing 51-24 manhandling of the Tigers.

Northwood is not just a two-person show either. In coach Steven Thomas’ up-tempo style of play, everyone on the Chargers squad saw action in the first 10 minutes of the game. NW ran multiple defensive sets, including a full-court press, man-zone, and a swarming to the ball that forced numerous RHS turnovers.

"I’m very pleased," said Thomas. "They (NW) came out and were real aggressive and kept attacking Randleman the whole game.
