MARY "BOBBIE" EVANS

Mary "Bobbie" Evans, of Wilmington, died Sunday, January 23, 2005 at Cape Fear Hospital.

She was born August 21, 1923 in Bear Creek, Chatham County, NC, the daughter of the late James Abner and Ada Moore Phillips. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Hunter Evans, her daughter, Linda Evans Register, and her son, Thomas Glenn Evans.

She is survived by her son, James Philip Evans and his wife Anne; a daughter, Donna Evans Hicks and her husband, Dr. Charles Hicks, a daughter-in-law, Linda M. Evans, and a son-in-law, James R. Register, nine grandchildren: Christopher S. Register, Kimberly D. Register, Shannon E. Bickford, Leigh R. Nunnery, Samantha L. Evans, Matthew R. Register, Jennifer S. Guy, Alexander K. Vincent, and James W. Vincent; also four great-grandchildren; her beloved companion Buster, and her best friends Joe and Barbara Hancammon.

Mrs. Evans was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church. She loved her family, flower gardening, heirloom sewing and Boston Terriers.

A funeral service will be held at 2 pm, Wednesday, January 26, 2005 at the Calvary Baptist Church by Rev. Donnie Lovette and Rev. Jon Pedersen, officiating. Interment followed at Oleander Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to PAW's Place, 3701 Boiling Springs Rd., Winnabow, NC 28479.

ETHELENE PRESNELL STOUT

Ethelene Presnell Stout, 83, of 93 NC Hwy 902, died Friday, January 21, 2005 at Chatham Hospital.

Mrs. Stout was a native of Randolph County, co-owner with the former Baldwin-Stout Ladies Dress Shop and a member of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Clayton Stout.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, (01-25-05) in Pittsboro Baptist Church, with Rev. Tripp Harmon officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Arvie Stout; sons, Claude Stout and wife, Judy of Germantown, Md.; brother, Lacy Presnell, Jr. and wife, Ester of Raleigh; and two grandchildren, Abigale and Tyler Stout.

WAYNE DOUGLAS COLE

Wayne Douglas Cole, of Chapel Hill, was born on March 15, 1950 to Mattie Atwater and Fred Cole. He attended Chapel Hill High School and East Carolina University. He was a well-known figure at Tar Heel Car Wash where he worked for several years. He also held supervisory positions at The Village Advocate and RTI in Research Triangle Park.

He was devoted to his family and friends, fanatic about Tar Heel basketball, and always willing to give you his opinion of life. He loved jazz, was an amateur photographer and his favorite spot on earth was Sunset Beach. He lived his life to the fullest.

Wayne will be remembered by his wife, Kathleen Cole; son Ronald Griffis; father, Fred Cole; and sisters Iris Davis and Carmen Cole. He will be missed by his niece and her husband, Tish and Tony Sutton, and his new great-nephew, Dante, as well as his nephew and niece, Cole and Sadie Horton. His extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws, who scatter the country from New York, Maryland, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, are saddened by his absence.

Funeral services were held at the Newman Catholic Student Center on Saturday, January 22, 2005 at 10 a.m.

JAMES WARREN BREWER

J. Warren Brewer, 82, 1421 Rufus Brewer Road, Siler City died Tuesday, January 18, 2005 at his home.

Funeral services were held Friday, January 21, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Rocky River Baptist Church, Siler City with Rev. Greg W. Burriss and Rev. Gene Booker officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Brewer was a native of Chatham County and a farmer. He was a member of Rocky River Baptist Church where he was a deacon, choir member and member of the Men's Bible class. He was also a member of Silk Hope Ruritan Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus A. Brewer, Sr. and Carrie Jerusha Craft Brewer, his wife, Frances Buckner Brewer and a brother, Harry T. Brewer.

Survivors include a son, James B. (Jimmy) Brewer and wife, Jenny of Siler City; daughters, Elaine B. Horne of Raleigh, Candace B. Fields of Siler City; brother, Rufus A. Brewer, Jr. of Siler City; sisters, Carrie B. Campen of Beaufort, Mozelle B. Vinsant of Ruldoso, NM; grandchildren, Susan Willson and husband, Scott of Raleigh, Stephen Brewer and wife, Denise of Jamestown, Brian Brewer and wife, Ashley of Siler City, Brooke Fields of Siler City; great-grandchildren, Mary Scott Willson, Hinson Willson, Gretchen Brewer, Madison Brewer, Harrison Brewer; and special friend, Joanne Fox.

MARIE BEAL BREWER

   Marie Beal Brewer, 84, of Goldston died Thursday, (01-20-05) at SunBridge Care Facilities in Siler City.

    Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m.  Sunday, (01-23-05),  at Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Moses and Rev. Larry Hutchins officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

  Mrs. Brewer was a native of Chatham County and a homemaker.

  Survivors include daughters: Emma Roth of Tampa, Fla., Raynell Hagen of Sanford, Hazel Brewer of Asheboro; sons, Darrell Brewer and Danny Brewer, both of Goldston; ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

VAN L. WILLIAMS

  Van Lindley Williams, 84, of Robbins died Sunday, (01-23-05) at his home.

   Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday (01-26-05) at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, with Rev. James Stalnaker and Rev. Clarence Garner officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

  Mr. Williams was a native of Moore County, a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class, the Methodist Men’s Club, church cemetery caretaker and former Trustee. He was a retiree from Carthage Fabrics and a poultry farmer.

  Survivors include his wife, Sallie Hill Williams of the home; daughters, Elizabeth Ann Ritter, Brenda W. Beane, and Vanlene W. Nelson, all of Robbins; sisters, Daphne Welch of Robbins and Ladina Baughn of Carthage; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  

DEWEY EDWARD HERRON

  Dewey Edward (Eddie) Herron, 58 of Siler City died Friday, (01-21-05) at SunBridge Care Facilities, Siler City.

  Graveside services and burial will be held Monday, (01-24-05) at Moon’s Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Scott Faw officiating.

  Mr. Herron was a native of Chatham County and of the Baptist faith.

  Survivors include his mother, Marie Gee Herron of the home; and one sister, Jan H. Lowe of Siler City.

BUSTER (BUCK) HOLT

  Buster (Buck) Holt, 83, of Siler City died Wednesday, (01-19-05) at his home.

  Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, (01-22-05) at Piney Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Herbert Lowry officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

  Mr. Holt was a native of Chatham County, attended Piney Grove United Methodist Church and was a self-employed painter. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and an avid guitarist.

  Survivors include his wife, Helen K. Holt of the home; daughters, Helen Hamer of Holden Beach, Holly Stewart of Sanford; brothers, Billy Holt and Milo Holt, both of Siler City; sister, Joy H. Hough of Siler City; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

  Memorials may be directed to Piney Grove United Methodist Church, 2343 Piney Grove Church Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

JESSIE ERMA FOWLER DAWSON

  Jessie Erma Fowler Dawson, 84, of Bynum died Thursday (01-20-05) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

  Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, (01-22-05) at Bynum United Methodist Church with burial following in the church cemetery.

  Mrs. Dawson was a native of Chatham County, retired from J. M. Odell Mfg. Co., and a member of Bynum United Methodist Church.

  Survivors include sons, Jimmy Dawson of  Emerald Isle, Rodney Dawson of Carthage; sister, Vivian Eubanks of Bynum; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

J. LAMONT NORWOOD

  J. Lamont Norwood, 88, of Pittsboro died Friday, (01-21-05) at his residence.

  Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, (01-24-05) at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist church with Pastor Rex Brooks officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

  Mr. Norwood was a native of Chatham County, graduated from Pittsboro High School and served nine years in the US Navy, including action in the battles of Pearl Harbor. Midway, and the Solomons. He was a dairy farmer,  a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, the American Legion Post #6 in Chapel Hill,  and the Pearl Harbor Survivors Group. He was unofficial historian of North Chatham County, at times still working for the Chatham County Historical Society.

  Survivors include his wife, Blanche Whitfield Norwood; son, Richard Wade Whitfield of Pittsboro; brothers, Max Norwood  and Richard Norwood of Pittsboro, Victor “Pete” Norwood of Burlington; and one granddaughter.

CHARLES BROWER “COCONUT” COOPER

  Charles Brower “Coconut” Cooper of Staley, 75, died Wednesday, (01-19-05) at Thomasville Medical Center in Thomasville.

  Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, (01-22-05) at Staley Cemetery in Staley with Chaplain Ron McLaughlin officiating.

  Mr. Cooper was a native of Staley, a retired truck driver and served in the U. S. Army.

  Survivors include sons, Danny Charles Cooper and James “Jimmy” Cooper, both of Staley; mother, Cora T. Cooper of Ramseur; brother, Jacky Cooper of Staley; sisters, Mary Lois Clark of Siler City and Patsy Beard of Staley.

 MARY JOSEPHINE McINERNEY

  Mary Josephine Ryan McInerney, 93, of Siler City died Sunday, (01-23-05) at Chatham Hospital.

  Funeral services were held Wednesday, (01-26-05) at 10:00 a.m. at St. Julia Catholic Parrish, with Father Michael Lorentsen and Father Joseph Madden, officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery in Siler City.

  Mrs. McInerney was a native of New York City, NY and was a retired research assistant with the State University of New York. She was a member of St. Julia Catholic Parrish.

  Survivors include a brother, James B. Ryan of Homasasso, Fla.; and sister, Margaret Mary Ryan Protor of Valley Cottage, NY.

EDMOND RYAN MILLIKEN

  Ryan Milliken, 32 of Raleigh, died Saturday, (01-15-05) at Rex Hospital.

  Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, (01-18-05) at Corinth A.M.E. Zion with Rev. Corey Little officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

  Mr. Milliken was a native of Chatham County, a graduate of Jordan-Matthews High School and North Carolina State University. He was also a member of Omega PSI PHI Fraternity.

  Survivors include his wife, Lavonda W. Milliken of Cary; sons, Kamau and Ijoemah, both of Cary; parents, Edward and Ella Milliken of Siler City; and brother, Edward R. Milliken, Jr. of Raleigh.

WILLIE H. HEADEN

  Willie H. Headen, 72, of Pittsboro died recently at his home.

  Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Monday (01-24-05) at Knotts Funeral Home Chapel in Pittsboro with Rev. William Moses officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.

  Mr. Headen attended Horton High School.

  Survivors include his wife, Ester B. Headen of the home; Texanna Maracheau, Juliette Nelson, Maria Shaw, all of Durham, Venus Allen, Janqueline West, Terry Tabon of Sanford: sons, Wallace Alston of Hillsborough, Willie Headen, Jr.,  Dwayne Headen of Durham, Christopher of Siler City, Tommy Headen, Germany, Willie Jr. Tabon, Ricky Tabon, Ray Tabon of Sanford; three sisters, four brothers, 44 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. 

MARCIA T. WARREN

Marcia T. Warren, 84, of Tarboro died Sunday, January 23, 2005.

Graveside services and burial were held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 26, 2005 in Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Christopher Edmonston, officiating.

Miss Warren was employed with Carolina Telephone & Telegraph for 40 years.

Survivors include a sister, Christina W. Dark of Siler City; nieces, Christina D. Grady, Burlington, Marcia D. Coreth, Richmond, Va.; nephew, L. Talton Dark, III, Morganton; God-children, Katherine Everett & Martha Stone, both of Charlotte, Margaret Everett of Asheville; three great-nieces and one great-nephew.

(Or 'good grief, it's suppertime again')

  I find that I am using my crockpot more than I have in a long time. Therefore, I was pleased when Mary Alice sent me one of her friend’s recipes for crockpot Garlic Beef Stroganoff. This is a dish that I enjoy and it used to be very popular years ago. I think you will enjoy this easy version of an old favorite.

 

 

CROCKPOT GARLIC BEEF STROGANOFF

(Serves 6-8)

 

2 teaspoons beef bouillon granules

2 pounds round steak, cut into thin strips or cubed

1 cup boiling water

1 can cream of mushroom soup

1 cup sliced mushrooms

1 onion chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced – or to taste

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

8 ounces cream cheese, cubed

 

 

   In a crock pot or slow cooker, dissolve bouillon in water. Add soup, onion, mushrooms, garlic and Worcestershire. In a skillet, brown beef in oil. Drain off the fat. Transfer the beef to the crockpot. Cook on low for 7-8 hours or until done and tender. Stir in the cream cheese until melted and smooth.

  Serve over egg noodles.
