EA's second half surge sinks NW By Don Beane MEBANE – Eastern Alamance used a strong second half here on Tuesday night to storm back and grab an important 63-52 Mid-State 2A Conference win over Northwood. The Chargers appeared to be in control at the intermission, holding onto a comfortable 34-27 advantage. But in the third, the host Eagles exploded for 23 points while holding Northwood to just eight, which turned out to be the difference in the game. The EA inside tandem of Lamorre Marsh and Hunter Collins, the latter a 6’6 sophomore, opened the second half with a pair of baskets to trim the NW lead to 34-31. A pair of buckets by Terrence Johnson, the final a beautiful floater in the lane at the 5:32 mark, kept the Chargers in front 38-32. You could just feel the momentum shifting, however, and the Eagle surge continued as the host club would outscore the locals 12-0 over the next three minutes to seize a 44-38 lead. Highlighting the EA run was three consecutive treys including two straight by Zach Holliday and a final one by Warren Thompson.
Expansion equals Big Four reduction Last week was an exciting one in the world of ACC basketball, especially for fans of the Big Four. Wake Forest and North Carolina played in one of the biggest in-state rivalry games anyone has seen in a while, and Duke and NC State met in the RBC Center. These were just two of several meaningful conference games during the week, but the hidden meaning behind it all was that, barring a meeting in the ACC or NCAA tournaments, it would be the last time this year these teams would play each other. With the Wake and Carolina rivalry at its peak following the fourth-ranked Deacons whipping of the third tanked Tar Heels on Saturday, the plug is being pulled from an epic re-match in the Dean Dome. UNC will not get the chance to avenge this year’s loss or last season’s tripe overtime defeat in the Dean Dome to these same Demon Deacons. It’s hard to say whether or not State minds not having to go to Cameron Indoor Stadium, but the Blue Devils would have cared mightily had they lost to their neighbors.
