J-M gets by Cougars in round one 44-38

By Don Beane

ASHEBORO – Jordan-Matthews coach John Phillips expects big things from senior Michael McMaster this year.

On Saturday afternoon at Asheboro High School "Big Mac" showed exactly why his coaches expectations are warranted as the 6’5, 255-pound center powered in 18 points and ripped down 12 rebounds to lead the Jets to a hard-fought 44-38 victory over 3A Southwest Randolph in opening round action of The Courier-Tribune Christmas Invitational Tournament.

The victory moves J-M to 4-3 on the season while the Cougars fall to 6-4 under first-year head coach Seth Baxter.

From start to finish here on Saturday afternoon it was a downright dogfight as the both teams banged and scrapped the entire game.

With 4:14 remaining, the contest was knotted at 33-33 when McMaster pulled down a rebound on the offensive end and was fouled by 6’6 SWR center Anthony Copple on the way back up.

McMaster calmly sank the two foul shots to put J-M in front 35-33.

It was the spark of a pivotal 8-0 run by the locals over the next three minutes which gave the Jets a 41-33 advantage. McMaster tallied another basket down low in the Jordan-Matthews run while Michael Horton and Justin Snipes each nailed a pair of foul shots in the stretch.

Leesville Road drubs Lady Chargers

By Anthony Holderied

SOUTHERN PINES – Coming off of a dominating silencing of 4-A host Pinecrest in the opening round, the Lady Chargers played victim in a 50-26 drubbing by Leesville Road in Tuesday night’s championship game of the Holiday in the Pines Christmas Tournament.

Northwood (4-4) witnessed a meltdown in its meeting with the Pride (8-3), scoring just 15 first-half points and never really being in the contest after the first quarter. Just one night after holding Pinecrest to 22 total points, the Lady Chargers were unable to find a scoring touch against the 4-A foe from Raleigh.

Leesville Road’s Lauren Hable salted away her Most Valuable Player honor in the tournament, by tallying 12 points and five assists in the final after opening the tournament with 19 points against Hoke County.

Lady Chargers get first round win

By Anthony Holderied

SOUTHERN PINES – The Northwood girls knew coming in that if they could keep Pinecrest out of the paint, they should be able to pull out a win in Monday’s opening round of the Holiday in the Pines Christmas Girls’ Tournament.

Squaring off against the 4-A host in the first round, the Lady Chargers made a defensive statement with their 2-3 zone, shutting down the Lady Patriots from start to finish in a 37-22 decision.

In a game not all too pretty, Northwood carried a 15-5 run from the opening gun while never looking back. The Lady Chargers never trailed in the defensive struggle, after taking a 9-0 lead to start the game.
