Hurt, Jets soar by Eagles on Monday night By Don Beane SILER CITY – For two quarters here on Monday night it was evident that Jordan-Matthews was feeling the affects of a tough loss to rival Chatham Central just two days earlier. The Lady Jets (5-7, 8-12) came out flat against an athletic and improved East Montgomery club that took it to the locals for the first 14 minutes, building a 24-14 advantage. When all was said and done, however, the young J-M squad shook off its lethargic start and rallied for an important 54-50 Yadkin Valley 1A win over the Eagles. "This was a big win for us," said Jet head coach Jeff Stutts after the victory. "East Montgomery has really improved and is very athletic. They’ve been on a roll of late and came in here to get a win." The Eagles, fresh off an upset win over South Davidson, used it’s quickness and talent to break open a close 8-7 game in favor of the Jets with a 17-6 run that spanned from the 3:59 mark of the first quarter to the 1:41 point of the second.
Central routs Dogs in season finale By Don Beane ALBEMARLE – The Chatham Central wrestling team capped off a strong regular season with a 60-18 pounding of Yadkin Valley 1A rival Albemarle on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bears improved to 14-5 on the year and enter the upcoming 1A Dual Team state playoffs with a 14-5 record. Central, the 3rd-seed out of the YVC, was scheduled to battle Coastal Plain champion Topsail last night (Tues.) down in Hampstead. The winner of that contest was to take on the survivor of Plymouth and Trask for the right to advance to the eastern state finals. If the Bears do advance into the eastern finals on Thursday evening they have a shot at hosting the match at 7:00 in Bear Creek. The opponent would come from the other half of the eastern bracket which features Yadkin Valley top-seed West Davidson, who was scheduled to battle Durham School of the Arts on Tuesday in one bout, and defending 1A state champ and YVC 2nd-seed South Davidson grappling Goldsboro Rosewood in the second match.
