'The Beast' feasts on the Bears By Eliot Duke THOMASVILLE – This year’s version of the Thomasville basketball team may not be the biggest or best Bulldogs squad of recent years, but they are still pretty darn good. For the second time this season, the Chatham Central Bears had the dubious honor of trying to curtail the athleticism and defensive pressure one expects when they take court against the Yadkin Valley 1A juggernaut. For the second time this year, the Bears had real problems. Ten different players scored for the Bulldogs in Thomasville’s 69-37 pasting of the Bears. In each of the first three quarters, the Bulldogs outscored CC by at least 10 points, building a 36-14 lead by halftime. Nick-named "The Beast", 6’4", 300-pound-plus center Brandon Taylor anchored the middle, both offensively and defensively, forcing the Bears to make shots from the perimeter. Although CC did bury six shots from 3-point land, the Bears simply couldn’t muster enough fire power to run with TV. "They (Bulldogs) aren’t as big as say the were two years ago, but they are extremely athletic," said Central coach Bill Slaughter. "They are head-and-shoulders above everybody else in the conference." Not to mention the Bears had to travel to Thomasville where the home crowd makes life really difficult on the opposition. The Bulldogs did nothing but fuel their faithful either, starting the contest off with a 13-3 run in the opening 4:51.
Local paper picks New England Super Bowl XXXIX will be played this Sunday between the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles, marking one of the biggest sporting days of the year. Most everyone will watch the game, regardless of who is in it or whether or not one even likes football. The Super Bowl has almost turned into a national holiday where plans are made as to where and who you will watch the game with. People order pizza and wings by the dozens and drink soda by the gallons, celebrating America’s big game that we share with the world. It’s not going out on a limb by saying the Super Bowl is the biggest sporting event of the year. No single game is watched or covered more. So much happens during the two weeks leading up to the event, ranging from the Hall-of-Fame inductees to the commissioner’s state of the league address. You know a sport is big when a commissioner delivers an address about the state of a sport, and people care. Usually what is said in the address actually comes to fruition. That’s why the NFL is the best run sport in the industry. Think it’s a coincidence or luck the NFL hasn’t had a strike since the mid-80’s? Doubt it. Maybe the National Hockey League should start asking the NFL for some counsel. While most fans around here would like to have seen a re-match of last year’s game between the Pats and the Carolina Panthers, we have to settle for a pretty compelling game.
