• The Chatham County Partnership for children is seeking volunteers to fill vacancies on the Board of Directors and its committees. It administers Smart Start in Chatham County, More at Four, Safe Start, and other early childhood and education programs. The Board meets every month on the 3rd Tuesday at 5:30 pm in Pittsboro and occasionally in Siler City. Contact the Partnership at 542-7449, ext. 22 to obtain a volunteer information sheet or check the website at www.chathamkids.org.

• The Friends of the Pittsboro Memorial Library will host a reception for The Afghan Folio: Documentary Photos of Luke Powell on Friday, February 11, 6 to 8 pm at the library. This event is part of the Friends’ Community Read of The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and is free and open to the public. • Tuesday, February 8 at 6 pm, SunBridge for Siler City will host their monthly Family Council Meeting in the Activities Room. There will be a short film produced by the NC Health Care Facilities Associations about a Skilled Nursing Facility, good for families of residents or those considering placement for a loved one. • The Chatham County Council on Aging will feature works of Fearrington resident El Tremblay. The watercolor exhibit will run through February 28. Gallery hours are the same as the senior center hours, 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. The public is invited to view the exhibits during these times.
• The Chatham County Public Health Department and Community Diabetes Advocates will hold a diabetes support group on February 7 at 6 pm at Family Resource Center, 225 Chatham Square. Topic: Heart healthy eating. Main speaker, Michelle Futrell, registered dietitian with the CC Health Department. There will be a chance to discuss the challenges of living with diabetes. • New Hope Audubon Society monthly meeting will be held Thursday, February 3 at Totten Center, NC Botanical Gardens in Chapel Hill. Speaker: Steve Hall, PhD., NC Heritage Program, “An Endangered Butterfly and its Ecosystem”. Visitors welcome – refreshments served.

• The Exceptional Children’s Assistance Center (ECAC) in conjunction with the Family Advocacy Network, a program of the mental Health Association of Orange County is sponsoring a free workshop for parents of children with disabilities entitled “Writing Effective IEP’s & “504’s” on Saturday, February 5 from 9 am to 12 noon at the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 632 Laurel Hill Road, Chapel Hill. Childcare and refreshments will be provided at no cost. Call 919-942-8083 to register in advance.

• The Chatham County Soil and Water Conservation District will meet February 10 at 7:30 pm in the Conference room downstairs in the Agricultural Building in Pittsboro. This is an open meeting. For additional information, call 919-542-8240.

• On Saturday, February 5, Open Gospel Pickin’ at Reno Sharpe’s Store, from 10 am until…Located on the corner of Goldston-Pittsboro Rd. and Reno Sharpe Store Rd., between Pittsboro and Goldston. Acoustic instruments only. Free and open to the public.
• On Saturday, February 5 at 11 am, Marty Broda will read from authors, Debbie and Carlos Roasas’s new book The NIA Technique: The High-Powered Energizing Workout that Gives You a New Body and a New Life at McIntyre’s Fine Books and Book Ends. Friday, February 11 at 7 pm, Alan Tennant will ready from his new book, On the Wing: To the Edge of the Earth with the Peregrine Falcon.
