Chatham teams begin tourneys, state playoffs By Don Beane Attempting to predict the high school basketball action this week appears to be futile at best as press time arrived on Tuesday afternoon. Of course my guesses may be as accurate as the recent forecasts of area meteorologists so here its goes. Tournament action in the 1A Yadkin Valley Conference and the 2A Mid-State Conference was scheduled to begin on Monday night. The Chatham Central girls opened with a win over North Moore on Monday night and will tentatively play on Thursday evening versus the winner of South Stanly/West Davidson. Semi-final round action and the YVC title games are being played at South Davidson High School. Jordan-Matthews was set to play at South Davidson versus the Lady Wildcats last night (Tuesday).
Lady Bears head to semi's with win By Eliot Duke BEAR CREEK – There were a few things Chatham Central coach Gerald Binkley wanted his team to improve on for Monday night’s opening round game against the North Moore Mustangs in the Yadkin Valley 1A Conference tournament. At the top of his list was rebounding. Following Friday night’s game against the Mustangs, Binkley found himself at a loss for words when trying to explain his team’s efforts on the glass. Although the Bears prevailed, if they were going to repeat the result of the other night, they were going to have to do a better job controlling the boards. CC gave its coach a reason to smile, whipping NM, 59-26, with a brutal combination of suffocating defense and interior dominance. “They didn’t shoot the ball as well, and we did a much better job rebounding,” said Binkley. Despite another fine effort by the Mustangs keeping Ashley Marsh under wraps, NM simply couldn’t generate any offense against a Bears squad that wasn’t yielding an inch.
2005 realignment has first draft By Don Beane CHAPEL HILL – After months of deliberations between the North Carolina High School Athletic Association and its high schools statewide, a first draft of conferences has been devised for the upcoming 2005 Realignment. In the 2A ranks, a proposal has been drawn up to put Northwood in a split 1A/2A league formed of nine members. Joining the Chargers in the new conference, if all is finalized, will be fellow 2A members Burlington Cummings, Graham, Cedar Ridge, Orange, Cardinal Gibbons, and the Durham School of the Arts, while Raleigh Charter and River Mill Charter will make up the 1A portion of the league.
