Chargers fall to Red Raiders

By Eliot Duke

HIGH POINT – Again, for the Northwood Chargers it was too little too late.

For the second straight game, the Chargers fell behind early, only to make a mad dash late in the fourth quarter.

For the second straight game, it didn’t work.

After falling behind by over 20 points to High Point Andrews, NW tried to fight back but simply had too big a hill to climb, losing to the Red Raiders, 74-64.

Playing through a brutal stretch of four games in seven days, with three on the road against Mid-State 2A rivals, the Chargers are beginning to show the effects.

"We didn’t want to have to play man-to-man against them, but we sort of had to," said NW coach Rich Rookey. "We have a couple of injuries that slowed us down a lot."

Straughn shines at 2A State swim meet

By Don Beane

RALEIGH – Despite swimming personal best times in both the 200 Individual Medley and the 100-yard Backstroke, Northwood’s Kevin Straughn failed to defend both state titles on Saturday at the state 2A championships on the campus of North Carolina State University.

Straughn, just a sophomore, captured titles in the two events last year as a freshman.

It wasn’t meant to be this time, however, as Cole Yarborough of Central Davidson took the Gold Medal in the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:00.83 while Johnny Hagaman of Black Mountain Owen taking the 100-yard Backstroke title with a finish of 55.08.

Trask bounces Bears in playoffs

By Don Beane

HAMPSTEAD – Despite a valiant effort here on Tuesday night, the season ended for the Chatham Central wrestling team in the second round of the 1A Dual Team state playoffs.

The Bears opened the night with an exciting 38-36 decision over host Topsail before falling 44-32 to Trask in the nightcap.

With the loss, Central closes the season at 15-6, and now focuses on the upcoming 1A/2A Midwest Regional hosted by Ledford this weekend. Bear coach Freddie Little anticipates 10 to 11 CC wrestlers to make the regionals.

Against Topsail, the Bears had its hands full with the host club wrestling in their home setting.

The match was nip and tuck before Central rolled off a 22-0 run to seemingly take total control with a 34-12 advantage.
