• Cub Scout Pack 93 is asking for help to feed the hungry. Put nonperishable foods in a grocery bag and place in drop locations at Lowe’s Food, Food Lion, & Kerr Drug, all  in Pittsboro. Donations will be picked up on February 19 from 9 to 12.

• “Cozy Up to History”, a 5-part lecture series about Chatham County, starts Thursday, February 17 at 7:30 at the Chatham County Courthouse. Dr. Linda Carnes-McNaughton will give a talk and slide presentation about 19th century Chatham County pottery-makers. Bring an early piece of pottery for identification. •An “Evening in Kabul” fundraising dinner and auction will be held Saturday, February 26 at 6:30 pm at the Pittsboro Senior Center. Proceeds will benefit the Council on Aging Nutrition programs and the Friends Community Read. Call 542-4512 for more information on tickets and the auction.
• The Sunset Sweetheart Concert will take place  February 12 in the historic Sunset Theater in downtown Asheboro at 7:30 pm. Doors open at 6:30. For information on tickets and fees, call 336-879-3459.
• A Family Valentine Dance will be held Saturday, February 12 from 7pm to 10pm at First United Methodist Church, 1101 West Raleigh Street in Siler City. All are welcome for music, dancing, and lots of fun, (Kid’s Corner with games and activities),  sponsored by the Family Outreach Support Services Division of the Chatham County Public Health Department and the Partnership for Children of Chatham County.  All activities are free.
• Parent Empowerment Program offers free programs to support parents: Conflict Resolution on February 16 and Coping with Transition of March 28. Contact Susan Mulder at the Chatham County Public Health Department for more information at 919-545-8399. Child care is available.

• The Southeast Chatham Citizen’s Advisory Council (SCCAC) meets every third Tuesday (February 15) at 7 p.m. at the Liberty-Chapel Hill Church in Moncure. Participation of all residents, businesses and organizations within our community is encouraged.

• The Goldston Veterans Memorial Committee is anticipating a completion date of May, 2005. Deadline to participate in the construction of this Memorial is set for Monday, February 14. For more information, including costs involved,  contact Linda Harris at 898-4122.
• Joni Ross will teach several workshop sessions in Beginning Basketry at the Moring Arts Center on Monday, February 28, 1-3 pm or 7-9 pm for adults, 4-6 pm for children. For fees, additional information, directions and to pre-register (required by February 23), call 336-629-0399.
• A spring wreath-making class with Floral Designer Linda Smith will be offered at Moring Arts Center in Asheboro on Tuesday, March 1 from 6-8 pm. Create an original spring wreath. Pre-registration is required by February 11. Call 336-629-0399 for fees, information and directions.
• NC Charter High School is now enrolling grades 9-12 for the fall of 2005. Public school – no tuition,  located in a restored mill beside the Haw River, 10 miles west of Carrboro. Students from all school districts are welcome. www.newcenturyhs.org or call 336-376-1122.
• Author Randall Kenan, professor of creative writing at UNC Chapel Hill,  will be the guest presenter at  Pittsboro Memorial Library on Sunday, February 20 at 3 pm. • The Chatham County Democratic Women’s group will hold their next meeting on Sunday, February 13, 3 pm at the Pittsboro memorial Library, West Street, Pittsboro.

• The NCACPA’s Triangle Chapter is hosting a CPE luncheon for area financial professionals on Tuesday, February 15 from 11:30 am – 1 pm at the Hilton RDU Airport. Speaker Steve Heston on Principles of Risk Management. Advanced registration is required and fees vary. • Hospice volunteer training offered by UNC Hospice on six Monday afternoons, February 21 to March 28, 1-4 pm at Carolina Spring Apts, 600 W Poplar Ave., Carrboro. For information, or to register, call Mary or Pat, UNC Hospice at (919) 542-5545.
• Auditions for Star Search 2005 will be held at Moring Arts Center on February 21-22 from 7-9 pm. All types of talent are welcome to audition: singing, instrumental music, monologue, magic, skits, dance, etc. Singers must provide their own accompaniment. • West Chatham Relay for Life team captain meeting will be held February 15 at 6 p.m. at The Chatham County Rescue Squad Building, S. Second Avenue, Siler City.

• Bluegrass Open Mic, Sunday, February 13 from 2 to 6 pm at “The Big Barn” on Hwy 49 between Ramseur and Liberty. Watch for signs. Free Admission. Bring a chair, come and play or listen. • On Friday, February 11, author and naturalist Alan Tennant will present a reading and slide presentation from On the Wing: To the Edge of the Earth with the Peregrine Falcon: On Saturday, at 11 am, triangle writing trio Dorette Snover, Kitty Lynn, and Robert Wallace will read from their stories published in Original Sin: The Seven Deadlies Come Home to Roost. On Sunday, at 2 p.m. Thomas B. Allen will read from his new book co-authored with Paul Dickson, The Bonus Army: An American Epic, at McIntyre’s Fine Books and Book Ends. Readings are free and open to the public.
• Fearrington Village will host the third annual Fearrington Folk Art Show, a comprehensive exhibition and sale from the southeast’s most renowned folk artists. February 19 & 20, over 30 diverse artists will feature their colorful and whimsical artwork using various forms of media. An Art-Car exhibition (art embellished vehicles) will also take place throughout the weekend. Free and open to the public, from 10 am to 5 pm at the Barn at Fearrington.
