Warriors too much for Lady Chargers

By Anthony Holderied

PITTSBORO – The Northwood Lady Chargers fell to 1-2 on their early season non-conference schedule, dropping a 59-45 decision at home to 2-A North State opponent Western Alamance on Monday night.

Northwood was coming off of its first victory of the year in a 51-47 defeat of Union Pines last week, but again had trouble finding the basket against the Lady Warriors Monday night.

The Lady Chargers hit just 16 field goals on the night and went 11-for-20 from the free-throw stripe in their lowest scoring output of the season so far.

A big factor in Northwood’s lack of production was some early foul trouble for sophomore center Brittany Stone who finished the night with just seven points before fouling out. Stone was coming off of a career high of 24 points in the win versus Union Pines.

Northwood had just one double-figure scorer in the game. Ashley Burnette tallied 11 of Northwood’s points for the second consecutive game.

Bears drop first wrestling match of the season

By Anthony Holderied

BEAR CREEK The Chatham Central wrestlers found the confines of Chapel Hill High School to be unfriendly last Monday, as the Bears dropped their first match of the season in a 59-24 loss against the 4-A power.

The good news for Central, is that the locals dished out an equal serving of lopsidedness in their previous match on Nov. 19 against Reidsville. At home, the Bears put a 64-18 wallop on the 2-A Rams, winning one of its two non-conference matches over the recent stretch.

The two matches were similar in that Chatham Central quickly jumped on its opponent to take an early advantage.

In Central’s loss at Chapel Hill, the Bears gained early ground with an opening pair of victories by Eric Wilson and Adam Safrit. Wilson (171) pinned foe Kenneth Silver and Safrit (189) pinned Beatrice Andres to get the Bears out to a 12-0 lead.
