Lady Jets claim fifth in C-T tourney

By Eliot Duke

ASHEBORO – Although the Jordan-Matthews girls lost in the opening round of the 14th annual The Courier-Tribune Christmas Invitational, the Jets could still manage a solid week by winning two straight at the holiday event.

After beating Randleman on Wednesday, J-M returned to the court at Asheboro High School on Thursday with a chance to beat the Southern Guilford Storm, and claim fifth place in the eight team field.

The Jets wasted little time jumping on the struggling Storm, using a strong first quarter to cruise to a 43-33 victory.

J-M built a nine-point lead in the opening frame, and increased the advantage to as many as 12 following a second quarter three-pointer by Jennifer Dameron.

One disappointment for the locals was that after scoring 16 points in first quarter, the Jets tallied a mere 12 in the next two stanzas.

Falcon's Brown clips Chargers

By Eliot Duke

CARY – At halftime of Northwood’s opening game in the Green Hope Christmas Tournament, everything seemed in place for a typical Chargers basketball night.

The score was close, and the Chargers, despite more cold shooting, found themselves still in position to win the game, something NW has found a way to do early in the season.

Only this time, however, there were no late game heroics by a unheralded player or last second plays that delivered victory.

Green Hope’s Marcus Brown made sure of that.

The Falcons guard scored 11 of his game-high 18 points in the third quarter, enabling the host team to get just enough distance away from the Chargers in a 61-47 GH win.

We were sluggish out there," said NW coach Brian Harrington. "I don’t know if it was exams or what, but we were sluggish tonight. We were running around like we hadn’t played basketball in weeks. They (GH) out-hustled us. That‘s the bottom line."

The two teams jockeyed back and forth through much of the first half, with neither team managing to pull away by more than four points, leading to a 30-28 halftime score in favor of the Falcons.

2004, What a wild year

It’s hard to believe that 2004 has already come and gone.

The year went by just as fast as the last, and no one knows what 2005 will bring.

In looking back at the past year, it’s hard not to put 2004 up there as one of the great sports years in recent history.

Personally, the year was fun.

In my first year here at The Chatham News, I got the privilege of covering two state championships, as well as getting to see a local school break a long losing streak.

Jordan-Matthews won the state championships in both golf and soccer, and I had the opportunity to be there for both of them.

It really is a cool experience to watch a local team go on to win a title like that because those are the moments people carry with them forever, and I am glad I got to be a small part of it.

As much as I love football, the Chatham Central Bears were one of the best stories of the year.

The Bears entered the 2004 season with another new coach and a 28-game losing streak.

When the year ended, CC not only broke the losing streak in its second game, but went on to win three more games, including the Bears first ever playoff victory.

I also remember the Jets playing eventual state champion Thomasville to a near draw on the road before finally losing 8-2, giving J-M hopeful a lot to look forward to in ’05.
