Jeff Davis photo I’ll take the low route . . . Northwood’s Terrance Johnson, 12, Marcus Crump, 44 and Rich Palmer, 20 converge on Southern Guilford’s Jordan Pegram as he tries his best to get away from them last week. Pegram found his way out of the maze and made his way upcourt on the play. While Northwood won this game, they lost to Cedar Ridge Friday night on a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Lady Chargers lose Mid-State opener By Don Beane GREENSBORO – Rich Palmer poured in a game-high 20 points here on Tuesday night to lead Northwood to a convincing 70-48 victory over Southern Guilford in the Mid-State 2A opener for both clubs. The Chargers (1-0, 4-1) were sluggish in the early stages of the contest, but broke open a sloppy game with a 10-2 run to end the first quarter. Terrance Johnson and Marcus Crump each had four points in the Charger surge, including a thunderous left-handed slam after a steal by Johnson. The Indians (0-1, 2-6) rallied in the second, however, sparked by sophomore Jordan Peagram who gave Southern a lift by connecting on a trey and a runner in the lane to bring the hosts to within 21-16 with 3:07 remaining in the half. Peagram finished the night with 15 points to lead the Indians.
Trey beats Northwood By Don Beane HILLSBORO – The game had all the makings of a classic here on Friday night. First off, it was Northwood taking on Cedar Ridge coached by former Charger mentor Jim Pappas. Northwood was also looking to improve to 2-0 on the season in Mid-State 2A action and to stay a top the league standings in the early going with High Point Andrews and Eastern Alamance. The Red Wolves and Pappas, meanwhile, were looking for its first ever victory in conference play after falling to secure a win last season in the schools first year of existence. All that came to a head here on Friday night. As the final second ticked off the clock and the buzzer sounded, Cedar Ridge’s Quinton McAdoo canned a 3-pointer to give the Red Wolves a thrilling 48-47 win over the Chargers.
Jet, Bears, Chargers all on the road in Christmas tourneys By Don Beane School may be out for the Christmas Holidays but area high school basketball teams are in session full time. Jordan-Matthews, Northwood, and Chatham Central each play in tournaments around the area in the upcoming week to give hoop lovers an added treat. The Jordan-Matthews boys will once again compete in the 13th annual The Courier-Tribune Christmas Invitational Basketball Tournament. The Jets enter the contest on a high note after opening conference play with a pair of wins and downing 3A Eastern Randolph 65-47 last week to move to 3-3 on the season. Once again the field is challenging to say the least as J-M must battle through a pool consisting of the likes of 3A’s Trinity, Asheboro, Eastern Randolph and Southwest Randolph as well as 2A Randleman, and Yadkin Valley 1A foe North Moore, if they are to have a shot at the title. Jordan-Matthews opens the tourney on Saturday, December 27th with a 3:30 tilt versus Southwest Randolph (4-2).
